utTraceStar: analyse your iBurst connection

Hi Seburn, the link for the new version doesn't work. Doesn't seem like the file was uploaded.

...and older versions seem to be removed from the site, so right now as far as I can see, there's no way to download it at all.

Anyone have an older version for me, please?

I appologise I will fix this tonight.

Each release has an expiry date to ensure everyone has the latest update.
I try set the date to a date when the new version should be ready by, but unfortunately I have been very busy of late and the project is snailing along.
In 6 months the new version(s) should be released, and with each release the date is set forward again.

At some point it may be decided that the project needs little further developement and in that case non beta non expiring version(s) will be released, with possibly just basestation updates.

Any plans to port this beautiful piece of software to linux??

I'm in the process of migrating to SuSE and i just realised that this is the only piece of software that i use regularly that doesn't have a Linux version or alternative...

I have the most basic versions in C++ / QT on Linux (Fedora) and Java, but not quite ready to release it on the unsuspecting public...

How bad is it ;) I don't mind BETA testing for you - might even be able to do some coding (if i can find the time)

PM me if you want.

I connected my new iBurst modem tonight, but everytime I want to run utTraceStar, I get an error message saying it "can't pick up the USB cable". I've been surfing the whole night on the internet with the USB cable connected (I have a Desktop modem).

I also noticed that the list of towers were last updated in March. I have a new tower about 5-7km from my house. How will this program identify the tower if it is not on the list?

Hi. I have a USB modem and cannot use utTraceStar. I read about setting up a static IP and tried that. Thing is with a static ip I cannot login to IBurst - an error message comes up.

Am I missing something? I setup my static IP on TCP/IP properties for the IBurst connection, disconnected the modem etc. There was no option for a subnet mask.

BTW I am running WTK with a USB modem not a desktop one.

TIA

You shouldn't set up your IP on the Iburst connection but rather on your normal Network Connection. Set the iburst connection back to "Obtain IP address automatically", Set your normal network connection IP to 192.168.250.1 with subnet of 255.255.255.0. Reset your UTU, start the program and you are in the game.

ppsking and DagegeN:
We obtain most of our tower names from the end user. If think you can name a tower from the info on wbs's website your location and the info from utTraceStar then please post them here!

ppsking:
Yes you must change the ip on your ethernet adapter to something other than 192.250.0.x and then find the usb adapter(fake high speed connection) for iburst and change its IP to 192.250.0.1 Please read FAQ on changing the ip manually.

Also there is no error message "can't pick up the USB cable" !!!
Please inform me if you recieved that exact message!

sabagamma: I have not tested the usb only device, it could be possible that it works differently, however Trixanno said he got the UTU working ;)

hey guys i recently downloaded tracestar and i get -65 as my avg signal. now will an external antenna benifit me? I stay in a dip(northcliff). Any help will be appreciated

Has anyone had this problem before?

No but one might get this error in other applications too as result of incorrect closure of the application.

I however, do not think this is the case. How exactly did this error pop up?
What happened before and after. What programs are you running? Do you use Anti Virus if so which one.
And lastly how often does this error come up?

The most probable causes are either my application is still writing to the file whilst trying to write to it again, or the file is being used by another application and is locked at the time.

I will list this a bug and implement a solution according to the information you give me. The bug list is actually very short apart from the wizard which I am afaid is still under redevelopement.

I am also Looking into project mono as it now seems to have the necessary compents to make the application linux and mac friendly. I will need to test this though. USB support will be a little tricky and the wizard will not work in linux in the begining.

utJavaStar a Java implentation will work cross platform at the moment and I will be putting this on the utTraceStar site shortly along with a few extra FAQ to do with it.

[sideNote]
I hope WBS do something to keep their product competitive.
ADSL coverage is probably expanding at a faster rate than iBurst.
ADSL connections are more stable and the ping times are lower making for better connectivity and therefore better VOIP.
ADSL connection prices are dropping and speeds increasing making iBurst seem less inviting. Excluding the 64kb/s after capping the prices are cheaper on a 384 connection already.

guys im lost could someone pls help me
....
Someone did make drivers and info was available in this thread iBurst Linux USB drivers
You say you have the drivers though, so then your problem is configuring pppOE.
If you have pppOE then you should be able to run "pppoe-setup". If you cannot find another device besides your network card then type ifconfig you should have three devices afaik eth0 eth1 and lo or something like that. If so try a possibly different pppOE client eg http://www.roaringpenguin.com/penguin/open_source_rp-pppoe.php. If not I am unsure? Maybe the drivers work differently or just don't work.

This shouldn't have been posted in my thread though.

Hi, I'm not so learned with the technical stuff, but how do I set my network ip?

Go to Network Connections (Get there from Network places or Control Panel) and right click on your connection that connects to the UTx then click properties, select TCP/IP from the little list in the box and click properties, here you can enter the IP adress and subnet.

Btw, like he said, dont change the actualy Iburst connection which you connect in order to get the internet, just chnage the ethernet connection that you get from connecting the UTD to the PC.

seburn, it only happened once. it popped up when i started the up. i think it must've been the anti-spyware program (kapersky). i'm using another one now. didn't happen again.

all's well now, but imho the wizard really sucks.

Holy crap. -55? I think thats the best signal ever...

The weird thing is of course the 2km distance, but that is worked out by hte program and im shure there are some errors when you are that close.

Okay, sorry I see you say how long.. well mine stayed almost the same signal anytime I tried it and no matter for how long really, only flactuated by 2Db, but I think that was when I was idiling compared to when I was using the connection.
I see yours jumps quite a bit more though... Must simply be that your connection is so good that it gets affected more by other people using the network. Becasue you are capable of getting -55Db, when it gets a bit more crowded that is obviously going to jump, compared to me who is only capable of around -100Db, and I am always capoable of getting that signal even if the tower is very crowded.

So how long to leave it, im not shure if there really is an answer, maby it would change day to day depending on the amount of users. But I guess as soon as you get a good median value, it should be fine. Basically as long as you have let it run looks okay, I dont think it should change much from that 60DB value now.
