Hi all

Does anyone else have problem with really slow speeds at times ? I have the 256k flavor my Wireless, and usually it is very impressive, and I extremely happy with it. but there are times, like right now, when it just grinds to a halt, doing the myADSL speed test on this site gives me a result of around 35k, (normally get between 200 - 250) Im pretty sure there is no real answer or solution to this, but thought I'd ask. I just really hope that the service doesnt slow down more and more as more people join. Hopefully the oposite will happen, and as more subscribers sign up the more money they will pump into their infrastructure.

My Info: Durban North, Tower 60, 21% Signal, 256k Package.

Cheers for now.

I think it is just a problem right now. I usually get really good speed but today it really sucks. Its interesting that you are in Durban.. that means it is a larger problem than I thought. I know of someone with similar problems in Jhb as well and I am in pretoria.

Normally there are slow downs but that would mean down to about 60-70% full speed and not 3K/sec like tonight. Dont worry about the sharing for now. I reckon they will adjust the bandwdith as they add subscribers.

Can anyone else who is battling tonight please post? This really sucks. 50MB in 3 hours is avg speed of 4.5K/sec which is about a third of what it should be. browsing response time is really sucky. This brings back long forgotten memories of analog 28.8 dialup. [:(!]

I'm having the same problem today.

I've had it with 2 different modems, on 3 different towers... so we're all suffering.

I can't listen to my streaming audio tonight [V] Oh well hehe...

Also on 12 ...

steems TRULY seem fubar....

Oh well

i actually spoke with someone at call centre today and he mentioned them experiencing some problems, whatever, i dont really care as long as they sort it out, my 512k feels like 128k isdn if i access international sites

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

I am having major issues as well tonight

Base Station : 36
Signal 21-27% always.

First off the Base Station seemed to be down for a large part of the day, and the *Remote Comp didnt Respond* message from hell kept bothering me as well.

Normally the Ping to the international game I play isnt to bad, but tonight its horrible...

Even pinging www.Sentech.co.za timed out 1/4 in 3 tries....

Glad to hear its not just me.

Lets all just hope its a temp problem that will be sorted out soon.

Thanx for all the feed-back guys.

There ya'll go [8D]

I connect to 82, usually with 3 lights and 12%.

However, either due to the wind, the lunar eclipse yesterday, the tree outside the house, some idiot fiddled with the tower, the neighbor farted, etc.. I now get 1 light and 3%, and downloads are dismal.

When will they learn - if it isn't broken don't fix it. Anyone else connecting to 82 noticing a big drop in signal strength?

Guys, it is slow everywhere. Its a pretty serious problem by all accounts and they *hope* to have it fixed by morning so hold thumbs! So be thankful that we are at least online.

Donovan, the problem from the email is unrelated (or not the direct cause) to tonights problems. This is something else but it possibly still the upstream provider (IS) and not directly Sentechs fault. So the call centre cant really help. Ask me - I know.
Anyways.. go to bed early and hope that everythings fixed by morning. IS people reading this - get back to work [:p]

About 82, cant someone throw a large rock at or bomb that elusive tower? I mean its been a hassle for months now.. Youd think it would be different after optimisations.

Donovan, do you connect to 82 using a cantenna? If so, there must be a closer tower since usually 12% (with can) means you are pretty far from the tower. I checked today - the difference the can makes is about 8dB so compare that to a "high gain" 9dB antenna [:p] -- IMO someone fiddled with the tower. The do it here all the time. If you are online for days then suddenly it goes wonky, in my book that means they fiddled. I could be wrong. What is your next closest tower?

Finally, Im sure they only fix it if its broken. But it may be broken for some and working for others so instead of (for example) resetting a sector they reset the whole tower. Or by tweaking some people in, others get tweaked out. I'm sure its the minority though.

Hey greedyflyza,

I'd be quite happy to throw a bomb at 82... stupid thing *mutter mutter*.

I connect to 82 using just a plain old modem :-) No extra antennae. Once we get out ethernet cable, it will be connected using a patch antenna mounted in the loft... but it's worked fine for 4 weeks. I'm about 4.something k's away.

The next closest tower is 110 (Horizon View), but we've never connected. In reality, it's closer than randburg, and yet it's on a wierd "on the other side of the hill" scenario, so we've never seen it.

Ag well, it's happened before. Hopefully it will be sorted... *holds thumbs*. As long as I am online I am happy.

From what I heard guys it's that virus doing it's rounds :) I don't think it's Sentech's fault that a teenager wants some fame :) just a guess though

Thats pretty much the reason. Its more complicated than that. I know that we are on a kind of backup link (thats why it is slow) so they are probably working on a method to block the virus traffic on the normal data link. Its not a serious virus (ie corruption) but its probably choking the routers (like a DoS attack) and I guess they have to figure out how to block it. Hopefully this is sorted out very quickly - for a number of reasons.. And heres hoping they learn for next time (like everyone else) --> I can proudly say (by keeping updated) I wasnt even affected by blaster, sasser, mydoom or anything so far. It is possible and yes I use Windows.

Seriously Donovan, get yourself a decent can. You could pick up at least 5% extra. 4.x is far-ish but it should still work fine in a non-built up area. Im in the relative city and I get 20% with can from 3km. I have no experience with tower "jumping" since I always connect to the same tower. Even when its broken. Plus theres a tower that is 100m closer. Oh well. At least Im very very far away from the evil tower 82!

Indeed, it's generally true, if one just keeps updated on a regular basis (e.g. WindowsUpdate just once a week), then one can reduce one's probability of catching $LATEST_WORM by a large factor. One can't totally eliminate that risk of course (there is always a 'window of opportunity' between time of exploit and/or virus discovery and time of patch availability), but keeping up to date definitely helps (and IMO avoiding Outlook and IE). What's sad is how many users deliberately don't keep their systems patched, just shrug it off and say "I don't care because I don't use my machine for anything important".

I can't say I've really noticed any speed problems lately, nor had any problems with disconnects this past week.

Bit of the topic,

Which is better, Patch Antenna or Cantenna? I got a really nice Chivas Can...and im thinking that cutting the Patch Antenna Wire would be perfect....ONLY if the can is like 5% better than the patch.

I'm getting 5 Lights/Software and 4Lights Modem with a 25% avg Signal Strength, with the Patch Antenna.

You can ask anyone on the forum that's turned their patch antenna into Cantenna, and the answer will be a resounding: CANTENNA beats the lil crappy patch by a mile.

Buy the patch for the pigtail, that's about as much as it's useful for.
