Hi all,

I have a 20MB line with Telkom (originally 40MB but downgraded as it is more than 800m from the exchange).

I now get a connection, but I've been monitoring the uptime on it, and I've had something like 500 failures in the past three days. Typically the router loses the internet connection for about 1.5 minutes before reconnecting.

I have the standard Telkom Pace router & Afrihost is my ISP. I'm using both local and international IP addresses in the uptime test.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've contacted Telkom and they just say that everything looks good on their side.

Thanks

Richard

You might also try disconnecting all handsets whilst testing - I recently had a SNR problem that a Telkom techie traced to a noisy handset.

Great. Thanks. I'll give that a bash as well.

I'm also on 20Mb, about 1Km from the exchange and was previously using a PACE router.

For the past few weeks, the router kept frequently disconnecting then connecting again. Logged numerous calls until a Telkom technician came over to my place, checked all wiring and all looked good. He left me with his PACE router to test with for a few days. Disconnections kept occurring on that one as well. When I looked at the SNR of BOTH the PACE routers, it was hovering just over the 6dB mark with max sync rates around the 12Mb mark.

Out of desperation, got myself a ZyXEL VMG1312 router. Tried it this past Friday. My SNR is now around the 20dB mark, consistent sync rate of 17.92Mb and no disconnections since Friday. Speed tests are around the 16.5Mb mark.

If you have access to a different router to test with (assuming other suggestions haven't resolved the issue), give that a try. I was on the verge of cancelling the VDSL account because of the frequent disconnections. For the premium we're paying, makes no sense having an unreliable service.

Now waiting for TelkomZA to advise how I can sync at the 20Mb mark. When I initially got the VDSL line, the router would consistently stay on the 20Mb mark but 17.92 is now the max :(

Thanks mozez.

I've tried changing the POTS and unplugging the phone, but neither have sorted things out.

I think I'll have to try looking at a new router. My SNR scores aren't great. 7.8 up and 10.5 down.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated!!

I also use the ZyXEL 1312 and it works great. Its decently priced and you can pick them up at any Matrixwarehouse for R750. Much cheaper than the Pace.

With regards to your sync speed, pop onto the Telkom chat. They have pretty decent techs on the other side.

Decently priced and works great. No issues so far.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try the chat route with regard to my issue.

I also got the ZyXEL from Matrix warehouse, quiet happy with the purchase.
