Hi All

I'm curious at what you guys pay for insurance on your cars because I've actually been shocked by the insurance of a nice car (+-400k). I assumed comprehensive. I've used hippo.co.za to get a ballpark but I'm interested in the reality. In brackets I put in the info I have tried out. Could you guys complete the template below:

- Make (mercedes, vw, audi, ford)
- Model (A250, Golf 7 Gti, A3, ST)
- Year (2014)
- Your age (32)
- Insurance Premium and excess if it applies (Anything from R1500 to R2200)

Have a good one

Find out if your employer (or maybe your spouse's employer) belongs to a group scheme for vehicle insurance. You'll find that its much cheaper this way.

Don't use Hippo. The owner of Hippo also owns all the companies it "compares".
I have found Santam, through a broker, gives you a really great rate, and more importantly, pays out with almost zero hassle.

I don't think many people would want to state here the type of car they own :)

Ignore Hippo, they're a rip off....

Get a broker and use a decent insurance company like Santam or Alexander Forbes.

Don't go direct unless its direct to a broker!

We pay R200 & R380 pm for a R40K car and R100K car with small excess. Also its all bout your risk profile (we are both in our late 30's)

Guys, out of interest, post the details requested. I pay:

- Make BMW
- Model 318is
- Year 1996
- Insurance Premium and excess if it applies (R2500)
- Value: +- R 55 000

R175

Ok, fair enough. Exclude the make and model.

- Year
- Insurance premium
- Value car is insured for

- 2012
- R600pm
- Value R340k
- Excess when we signed up was R0. A year later it was upped to R2500.

This is via a group scheme offered by insurance brokers and underwritten by one of the larger insurers.

Who cares.

- Make Hyundai
- Model Atos
- Year 2007
- Insurance Premium and excess if it applies (R2000)
- Value R40K
R200

- Make Hyundai
- Model i10
- Year 2012
- Insurance Premium and excess if it applies (R2000)
R380

This is through a broker and underwritten by Hollard. We also have a basket of goods so not fair to give an individual price as some things subsidise others. We pay for a business insurance, household, car and bicycles in our basket.

2005 Polo 1.6 Comfort line
Premium R370
Value: R57000
2014 Chevy Spark
Premium R415
Value: R121900

Reason Polo is so high is because I was in an accident with it :-(

That seems cheap for a R400k car.

I am over 25, no accidents. For my Honda Ballade 2012 which cost R200k I pay R1k a month.

Edited:Through a broker.
