Verizon is AWESOME

I must be one of those unique individuals who would have unshaped first... sure uncapped is very NB, but unshaped first for me.

What is your reasoning behind that, if I may ask? Do you Skype or play online games etc?

Except for the rare occurrences Skype is fine these days on shaped (except shaped uunet;)).

I am curious as to what really benefits from unshaped, enough to justify the extra cost.
 
Skype is the main reason. I sometimes have 8 way teleconferences between US, Africa, India. The less throttled, the better. But I must admit, after seeing the performance on Verizon, I don't want to go back to IS. I don't think I will realistically consider Telkom unshaped.

Really? Skype is that much better? Admittedly I rarely have conversations with more than 2-3 other ppl but thats because it gets confusing not because of the line quality.

Makes a HUGE difference, we move a client of our onto unshapped because they have 8 - 9 Skype conversations going at once. It made a massive improvement to thier setup.

Maybe I'll try it out one day then should I have problems on a saix shaped account.
 
My experience is - and seriously - I got better voice quality to the US over standard SAIX dial up most of the time than 512k shaped ADSL.

I must agree with this wholeheartly, I was recently fortunate enough to help a friend set up his 56k dialup, the speed at which he was browsing was at least 5 times faster than me on 512k adsl. It sucks to say it, but why???

Edit: Hey Ed, be a sport, give us your verizon username and pass, I want to check it out :) hehehe hahahaha :D

There are 3 carriers in this country

SAIX (Telkom)
IS (Internet Solutuions)
Verizon (Ex. UUNet)

All the other ISP's sell bandwidth on one of the above networks... It's worth knowing which, because each has it's pro's and cons.

SAIX:
Owns the primary infrastructure, thus has good local / interntational speeds; accounts are usually shapped on the international circuit, there are however unshapped options which perform amicably. The SAIX network is quite reliabe.

IS:
Very good local bandwidth offer, they are the wholesellers of the 3/30GB product offering, which makes thier local bandwidth the cheapest in the country. IS has however been plagued with reliablility issues over the past months.

Verizon:
Has a very sturdy and very fast network; they only sell an unshapped international offer and a local only offer which is quite expensive in comparison to IS. Their unshapped offer seems to compete well and often out performs SAIX's. It is believed that Verizon's contention ratios are better than the competing networks. The Verizon network has been reliable, however there have been some issues with the SAIX / Verizon peering links.

We retailed them at 3c per MB ex. VAT. However our Verizon product range is currently under reveiw... I'll keep you guys posted.

We require a certian amount of interest to continue selling the product as there is a base cost to us.,
 
Oh ok, kinda expensive compared to IS, hopefully new prices will be alot cheaper

Erm... those are thier new prices. Came out with them in Feb, and there i no plan to change them in the immenent future AFAIK. :(
