Viewing .mkv on the ps3

ps3 media server is all you need, not sure if someone posted it.

Streams mkv with no problems.

The problem is if you use a wireless connection then the HD content stutters over the network.

The problem is that the .mkv files that are giving me issues are starting then stopping or skipping to the next file when played via the ps3 media server.

Is the PC that you're running PS3 media server on connected via ethernet or wireless?

Alright - I may have had a breakthrough over the weekend.

It seems that certain .mkv files are corrupted or not 100% for whatever reason, and this was the cause for mkv2vob and ps3media server kicking me out when transcoding (the mkv2vob forums are full of these issues).
SO, even after running the files through mkvtoolnix to sort them out, they were still out of synch when transcoded using mkv2vob because the .mpeg container does not map the audio to the video like the .mkv container does(as far as I understand it).

I tried using Handbrake to convert to .mp4 and hey presto, there is no audio desynch on the output file.
HOWEVER, the filesize is now 33% of what it was - which means I have lost quality somewhere along the line.

I will investigate but if anyone knows a bit about handbrake and can save me some time that would be great.

Another good application to use is XenonMKV. I use it to convert MKV files to MP4 files for viewing on my Xbox 360. It will automatically split files over 4GB and it doesn't recode the video. 95% of the time the audio is in sync as well.

Read my previous post Nickd if you want to avoid recoding which will always lose quality. Sometimes it is possible to just remuxe into an mp4, or just recode the audio into AAC and leave the video stream alone before remuxing again. As far as I understand neither mp4 or mkv "map" the audio to the video. The most you can do is set a delay but not all players recognise the delay like my ps3. A VOB file has timestamps on the video and audio so I suppose you could call that "mapped" as they are forced to align.

Thanks Spark - I will research it and give it a go.
How do you handle DTS?
I was a bit puzzled myself, the if there is no mapping in .mp4 then why did the output from my recode come out in synch?

Using tsmuxer and avidemux.

For the MP4 transmux, use avidemux.
For the m2ts transmux, use tsmuxer.

In avidemux, it's as simple as opening the file, selecting the video codec as "copy", audio codec as "copy" and container (or format) as MP4.

In tsmuxer, it's even easier; you open the file and go.

Of course, in all these cases, there are a multitude of settings you COULD set if you so chose, such as stripping extraneous audio tracks.

Hi Nickd, for DTS I used to recode to AAC in Megui for direct playback on the ps3. Here is a quick guide to show how to get it to work, the example is from DTS to AC3, but you can select AAC instead. http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_dts_to_ac3.cfm

There are so many variables I cannot answer why it is not in synch. mp4 files are not mapped in the sense that the audio and video can run out from each other and they would not know. For example if the wrong framerate was used they would run progressively out of synch. Anyways lets start from the beginning. Use Mediainfo on a mkv file that is giving you trouble and post it here. Actually better would be to host the file somewhere or give a download link and I will check out the file for you. Maybe you would need to PM the link... Hopefully we can avoid having to recode the video stream.

well, i always use Pavtube MKV Converter to help me convert MKV hd movies to m2ts or vob for playback on ps3. Till now, it can handle all of my hd contents. And its high output quality and fast conversion speed satisfied me very well.

As far as I understand it, the PC will play the file because it supports the decoding of .mkv, whereas in order to stream it to the ps3 the file needs to be transcoded to a format that the ps3 will accept?
Anyway, it plays some files - but the same files that I am unable to convert using mkv2vob just start and then hang on the ps3 when streamed...

the coding process needs fast processing and streaming via wifi just dont cut it.
