Virgin GPRS online|offline?

I'm having trouble to connect with my N70 via cable to the pc.
I can get on the wap site on my phone, so then I guess gprs is working fine.
I'm dailing up with *99# , but it goes through till it says "registering your computer on the network" then it hangs just there.

Does any1 knows the initialization.. string that I can put in (cant remember I did something similar with vodacom)

I use at+cgdcont=1,"IP","vdata" on my 6680. No connection problems here.

It was dead from [18:39:32] till about [23:46]...arg!
I can back this up. It connects and request data is sent, but then no data comes back. Clearly there is a connection limit operating here. I spoke to a customer services woman who advised me: "the internet is full...obviously when too many people use it it will get too full, please try later and I might get lucky ....". and "We are a small company so what do you expect ..."

What the HECK sort of company is this???????????????????????

Hi

Same problem here. I just don't know about Cell C anymore...Is it saturation at their towers or their connection to the rest of the Internet that is slowing things down? The thing is that we are trying to give them money when we log on to the Internet. Most companies would be incredibly bleak if their customers couldn't use their service and so couldn't give them money. I don't think that you can have a "small company" mindset and try to take on the giants (MTN and Vodacom).

Same problem here yesterday on vm :(. But then again the "giants" vc and mtn also had problems in the beginning and still do according to the other threads on this forum. It will take a while for the smaller guys to get to that level. But with Branson's millions backing them up i'm sure they will be a force to be reckoned with in the not to distant future :).

No, what sort of people are they employing here? The internet can't get full, it's peer based or is that pear based to her. Obviously they are having "missing internet" problems, but why so many and why aren't the staff properly informed? Unfortunately I don't see myself paying R2/mb or buying expiring bundles or tying myself to a 24-month contract with IBurst when something better might come along as options.

Vodacom has the most problems of them all. Many times I couldn't even connect and when on gprs it was slow to a crawl. Then for some unknown reason you suddenly get disconnected. I hope they sort this out before 3G arrives.

Well yes,the internet cannot get full, but a tower can get over saturated.

But the symptoms we have been having clearly points to a "missing internet" connection.

If the tower was ‘full’ you would have had NO chance of getting ‘connected’ and this would also not have affected you for hours on end and only ppl in your area.
If it was over full, someone would had have gotten off the GPRS sometime thereby opening a ‘slot’ for you.

This was not the case. We could connect; it was a country wide problem and it was in the SAME timeframe as everyone in the rest of the country.

Definitely a "missing internet" connection I would say.

Share your Internet connection through your LAN connection sometime. Now let someone surf the net on the other computer. Drop your Internet connection…the other computer will still show that the LAN is connected and try and send the requests, but no data will come back to it. –This is what we are experiencing.

Not what the help desk person said. The help desk should get their terms correct first so as not to confuse anybody and secondly they should know that there is a problem when the whole Virgin country is cut off from the internet. It doesn't help them a bit if their employees are seen as incompetant with no one knowing what someone else is doing.

On pc the Virgin data service seems to be unusable and on phone it works very slowly - during the evenings. Also from around 5:45am this morning "network not available"

well...just had some Virgin downtime again...
from about [22:58] till [23:21]

Truthfully I haven't been a fan of VC over the past few months, but IMO you can't use definitive term like "most" in this kind of situation. If there are "X" number of complaints per 1000 subscribers irrespective of network, then obviously VC will obviously receive the most number of complaints because they have the most number of subscribers, AFAIK more than the other 3 networks combined. But the actual number of complaints per network will depend on numerous factors such as area, network facility in that area, user IQ, specific services required by users etc. We can't therefore make the assumption that VC has the most problems without some kind extensive and thorough market research. Just my opinion.

P.S. I'm ready for the lengthy and furious responses to the above:D

It's a good idea to log all these faults with times etc.. so we can get together and 'present' them to VM. (Assuming we can find someone to listen) They need to be taken to task for their cr*p.

Jip, that is what I’ve been trying to do with post #1(http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=654311&postcount=1) on this thread, logging it all there. But I cannot 'catch' all the offline periods, and it is not 100% accurate. Like, there was some downtime on the 25th that I did not experience 4 myself….that’s why I need everyone’s help here. Any timeframes of the 25th’s downtime would be appreciated, thx

All is well with my Virgin Mobile GPRS connection again. No Disconnects,No data-stalls and No 'Non-Returning-Data(no internet)' Errors!

Welcome back Virgin Mobile! :D

So now I give lengthy and furious responses  I guess they are somewhat lengthy lately :D
I am not talking about the amount of complaints. I am actually talking about the amount of problems. They have endless disconnects, inability to connect at times especially from late in the evening when it is used the least, proxy crashes every other week, gprs that is slow to a crawl, data stalls where you have to disconnect and reconnect, and also over-billing from what I've heard. This is all their problems. I don't know how many complaints they have, but expect it to be many more percentage wise than the other networks. I don't need any market research to tell me they have the most problems, I experienced it first hand. Virgin's many benefits overwhelms their few problems by far.

That is just my opinion based on my experience. MTN possibly has the best service, but the price negates any benefits you might get over Virgin.
