Virgin GPRS online|offline?

i was under the impression that speeds were slower because of increased usage eg. by all the mxit addicts :confused:

MTN possibly has the best service, but the price negates any benefits you might get over Virgin.

i totally agree with the above :D virgin saves you a ton of money even if data speeds can be sluggish at times.

If this was the case then the speed would be just as slow on 3G as well and it's not. Vodacom's neglecting their gprs customers.

Yes yes yes - I am willing to put up with the sh*te at 50c /mb - I think it presents a nice challenge for the other folks out there; we're being ripped off; and nobody is fighting for the consumer on Bandwidth Costs.

I've just squeezed 43Meg out of a R15 recharge (10 Meg bundle) and it is still going, so MtN is quite generous at times.

I used R9.55 for 23.18MB of data which works out at 41.2c/MB. I downloaded 18.74MB however which works out at 50.96c/MB. Seems they only charged me for downloading. Will post again tomorrow.
 
Just had some downtime...rare!
Like for only 6 min...
Then 10 min later my connection 'dropped'.
Now all is fine again...
 
Mine is 'offline' atm...
Seems like the DNS is offline,I can only surf with IP's.
What fun... :P

Are you using manual or automatic DNS settings?

I've noticed the automatically assigned ones, 196.7.0.138 and 196.7.142.132, are very, very slow and reqests to them often time out. I remember those IPs from UUNET/iafrica days before MWeb took over, I have no idea why Virgin are assigning them.

Some people seem to have better luck manually using these: 196.31.116.241 and 196.31.116.242. See:

I was on the automatic DNS. I used the google ip I know and searched for another dns ip. I found 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 ,worked like a bomb!

MTN seem to have reverted to giving you exactly what you paid for:mad: Oh, well, it was good while it lasted. Now to see if Virgin can get their act together. MtN was just fast enough to not be irritating - Virgin, if you're listening ...
 
Is Virgin down for anyone else now? Can make a connection but barely get any data throughput. On Vodacom now.
 
No problems here...my connection just pinged out now. That in itself is rare. But im connected again now. No problems here it seems.
 
VM GPRS was offline for a some time today since just after 14:30. I dont know for how long...
 
Didn't try then. Yesterday it was disconnecting something chronic. If you don't go anywhere for 10 minutes, the connection dies but it still says 'connected'. <MTN doesn't do that.
