I bought a couple of EDGE modems from Hong Kong. They work nicely on proper networks like MTN and Vodacom. On bottom feeder networks like cellc and virgin they are ok - sometimes they disconnect - but overall they are usable.
The problem comes in with customer support. All my EDGE modems have prepaid virgin sims in and I have to routinely log on to the v.zone on virginmobile.co.za to check the airtime balance of each of the sims. A few days back one said "Problem with account". The sim itself was fine and could connect to the internet but I could not check the balance on the site.
I called virgin and they told me to change the vpin and wait and hour. I went through this process about 3 times and it still did not work. Then they sent it off to the data support guys to fix it. Apparently they would call me back on my Vodacom number within 24 hours. I only use virgin for the cheap data rates - for real cellular purposes I stick to the best.
They never called back, I called them after a day and then they said more I used the same vpin on more than one number. This was a major smash up on their network. I told them that at some stage it was the same as another number, but it was changed to something else on yet another attempt to get it going.
I had to hold for 10 minutes, then they said I must give them all my numbers and they will sort it out for me. This took ages... and it still is not sorted out.....
If they ever wondered why they have so little customers.... it is because their network and customer support is total k*k.
I would love to hear other people horror stories with this poor excuse for a network. Perhaps someday someone from virgin will see this and realize why nobody liked them.
