I bought a couple of EDGE modems from Hong Kong. They work nicely on proper networks like MTN and Vodacom. On bottom feeder networks like cellc and virgin they are ok - sometimes they disconnect - but overall they are usable.

The problem comes in with customer support. All my EDGE modems have prepaid virgin sims in and I have to routinely log on to the v.zone on virginmobile.co.za to check the airtime balance of each of the sims. A few days back one said "Problem with account". The sim itself was fine and could connect to the internet but I could not check the balance on the site.

I called virgin and they told me to change the vpin and wait and hour. I went through this process about 3 times and it still did not work. Then they sent it off to the data support guys to fix it. Apparently they would call me back on my Vodacom number within 24 hours. I only use virgin for the cheap data rates - for real cellular purposes I stick to the best.

They never called back, I called them after a day and then they said more I used the same vpin on more than one number. This was a major smash up on their network. I told them that at some stage it was the same as another number, but it was changed to something else on yet another attempt to get it going.

I had to hold for 10 minutes, then they said I must give them all my numbers and they will sort it out for me. This took ages... and it still is not sorted out.....

If they ever wondered why they have so little customers.... it is because their network and customer support is total k*k.

I would love to hear other people horror stories with this poor excuse for a network. Perhaps someday someone from virgin will see this and realize why nobody liked them.

Update :

I now cannot log on to their website with any of my virgin numbers - they seem to have changed the vpin on all of them without my concent or notifying me about it. The number I had a problem with is gone from bad "Problem with account" to worse "Account disabled".

Nice going virgin mobile. Lets see what you do next to top this disaster you have created.

Update :

They tried autosmart and created a "profile" for me. Now all of the numbers have the same vpin. Sounds nice but as added bonus they disabled the account or profile so now I cannot log in with any of them.

I hit rock bottom - thanks virgin - you're the worst ever.

Update :

I wonder if they are surfing mybroadband.co.za the whole day at virgin mobile.... Shortly after my last post I got a call and now can log on and see all my numbers whenever I log on to the vzone.

Amazing.

They have gone from rock bottom to OK-ish and a matter of minutes.

Hmmm. Stealth Virgin MyBB member :D

um....

"On bottom feeder networks like cellc and virgin they are ok" If you call them bottom feeders then why use them at all?
Why not just use the best as you say?
Maybe they have the best EDGE coverage or the best non-bundled rates?

They are the cheapest - like bottom feeders usually are. And it is not for me, it is for people that are very technically challenged

bottom-feeders imho does not fit them at all. Otherwise you should call Telkom the same, since they lease so much infrastructure. And I'm willing to bet MTN and Vodacom lease infrastructure too. Thats all Virgin is, a re-branded network that leases existing infrastructure and pays to use other people's infrastructure.

But then, could it not be the bottom-feeder modems from Hong Kong instead of the swiss /german/british made ones? :-)

right, more coffee.

The modems work like magic on VC/MTN. Recently on virgin as well - after our little war.

I Did like virgin mobile until they went Crazy

- Airtime via atm/internet doesnt load sometimes
- Told me i have over R40 vrewards than they tell me i never reg for it (but i found out that i did reg but their system mixed up my number)
-IM GOING PORT MY NUMBERS TO ANOTHER NETWORK JUST TO MAKE A POINT FOR WASTING MY TIME ON THE PHONE WITH THEM AND FOR MAKING ME WAIT 2 MONTHS FOR REWARDS I NEVER GET!

SHAME ON U VIRGIN ...

No problem with Virgin as yet. I don't use them for data and didn't port to them with the expectation to use data. There is obviously a reason you pay 50c/meg compared to R2/meg on other networks.
