You obviously know it all. Have never made a booboo.
I don't think thats the point. Its all about taking responsibility for your actions. There are far too many who knowingly sign up for services without reading the fine print and then try to guilt the people who supplied them with a service into refunding them when they get screwed over.

If you want an education go to school - its not the companies responsibility to teach you everything.

Ever heard of learning from your mistakes? If you take all the liability out of the situation then the person will never learn.

Go for the best solution. Get rid of Microsift Windows and change over to Mac OSX - no virusses and the best built in Firewall. Nothing can get installed on a Mac without the user giving permission.

FireTelkom (and FireMicrosoft)

Yes, but was your friend specifically monitoring VMC [which also displays data usage]?
The question is which VMC is he using, if it is VMC-Lite he would not have seen the sms's. Because VMC-Lite does not have a SMS option. If that is the case who's fault is it now?? Vodacom have only just recently made a VMC-Lite version availble that supports SMS's. This is now available via download from Vodacom.

Now Now girls no need to get defencive!! All I asked was a simple question. Seeing as this is the first time I've ever heard of this I was asking a rhetorical question. Glad some of you guys don't work at my local Vodashop. They would be bankrupt by now. You need to calm down and answer the question professionally.
I know you guys ar passionate about your product, this I respect But to climb into my friend caracter is not the answer. If Vodacom knows about this problem then why have they not informed us about it????????
AAAAHHHHH maybe because they score out of our misfortune?????
My folks are pastors and have recently purchased a Modem. R10 000 would cripple them. They have a stand-alone computer with a usb HSDPA Modem attached. Why would they not leave it connected???? Unless they knew about this problem. Not all of us are in the game and as "knowledgeable" as you.

URGENT URGENT. If they are using the E220 USB modem download the latest VMC-lite from Vodacom it supports SMS. The current version He/They are using does not support SMS's.

  1. Enable [searchforum]Call Limit[/searchforum] on that contract, it isn't foolproof, but it should suspend data transfer and outgoing calls etc before the bill reaches R10k.
  2. Consider using pre-paid instead of contract for data, see also [searchforum]PPDB[/searchforum].

I have decided to do exactly that. But if you have a 24Month contract you are stuck. Maybe the ISP's should give you an option to change if you would like to.

You are 100% correct but did the sales rep warn him about the risks of going OOB, NO. The provider of the service has known about this issue all along why did they not put a warning out ?. Learning from your mistakes, yes but not at the expense of others. At R6bn profit I just wonder where it comes from ?. @ic is there a copy of a contract so we can all see what is involved.

ic (or anyone),

Is there a way to receive smses when the datacard is used in the linksys router (that doesn't involve the sim swap dance)?

Best to read post#1 again where Bruce000 clearly mentions a data card being used and not an E220, and since VMC-Lite is currently only supplied with E220 USB modems, the whole VMC-Lite issue you mentioned does not apply.

Yes I realised that. So his friend Bruce000 should help him investigate and see where the sms's have gone. :p :p

I am going to go to Subaru today, they never warned me that if i drive over 120km/h i would bet a beeeeeg fine. How irresponsible of them. What you guys think my chance are :D

OOPS!!

As just about everybody has suggested the alternate sms to another number should be implemented immediately. @ic the VC mantle has now fallen on you, so what you say.:D :D

I believe several people with brains & education has fallen into this OOB trap. The big question is what caused his problem? He did have AV I am sure his Windows firewall was in place so what now?

Brga Brag Brag. But there were several warnings that if you exceed 120km you would be in trouble. Enjoy your picture of your Subaru. :p :p

Wasn't bragging but i really think this whole bitch about it been Vodacom's fault is pointless and rather immature ?

This is exaclty what i wanted to say. Its not my responsibilty to educate every single customer of ALL the dangers and risk involved. Firstly, its not my job. And secondly, it would take forever!

As a customer, how can you go and buy the most high tech laptop around, with the most complicated software, with the fastest internet, but not know A THING about using it? And when does that fact become my responsibilty, or even Vodacom's responsibilty, to educate you on how to use it?

No one is blaming Vodacom. Maybe just as a SERVICEit would be advisable to help and educate their clients.

This is exactly what most of the people the world over do! They use their laptop to write emails, listen to music and play games, and other work which has nothing to do with being a computer fundi! And exactly what is intended on the internet and by userfriendly software. Millions of completely computer unsavy people use the internet on a daily basis worldwide without knowing what a gigabyte even is. This is where the YouTubes, facebooks etc come in. Just in South Africa is it different.

When a child or grandmother or anybody clicks a link , they do so to see or hear what they have clicked. They do not sit and think, is this going to cost me R100 for listening to this streaming radio or R50 for the video. There are no concerns about the size of what they do. SIZE is an invisible measurement for most people. THis is where Telkom and their followers was so clever. In the old days I could determine usage and cost associated by the amount of time I spend on the internet. Now I can blow R200 in half an hour or R200 in a month, depending on the underlying quality and size of what I am utilising.

In fact it is only in South Africa that we should legalise an internet warning system for these type of services, whenever you click on a link, eg

THIS VIDEO IS DANGEROUS FOR YOUR BANK BALANCE BECAUSE IT IS 10 MB BIG - PLEASE CHECK TO SEE THAT YOU HAVE IN BUNDLE MBYTES LEFT OTHERWISE YOUR SERVICE PROVIDER IS GOING TO CHARGE YOU AN OUTRAGEOUS AMOUNT FOR THIS!!!!!

Hmmmmm... that happens about 500 times a second. To use the driving analogy. You need a drivers license before you buy a car. There is no such restriction on buying a pc/laptop. Big bussiness wants to put a pc/laptop adsl/hsdpa connection in every home but takes no responsibility for the result. Thats like standing at the school gates and selling cars to everyone walking out and giving them the keys right there and then.

I Think your being a bit harsh. If you drive one the most high tech vehicles with the most complicated software, does this make it your responsibility to know the ins and outs of all working parts. The answer is NO. The fact is you take it to a specialist if there is a problem. Someone that is trained in the automotive industry. If you had to apply what you are saying then every person that drives a vehicle should be a mechanic.

So from tomorrow all retailers may not sell any kind of modem without the purchaser having an internet licence.

Or a pc without an operators licence.

Would be interesting to see the retailers response. :)

I hear what you are saying, but i didnt mean everyone should go out and get IT Degree??? I said they should at least take the initiative to educate THEMSELVES first, instead of EXPECTING any IT Specialist to explain to them the in's and out's.

Its not your responsibilty to know every mechanical detail about your car, but its your responsibilty to LOOK AFTER IT.

With that said, your friend should have kept a closer eye on his laptop :)
