@Bruce000.
I would suggest your friend does the following if has not already done so.
1) Which version of VMC is he using?
2) Does it support SMS?
3) email [email protected] with his modem cell number and ask them if there were any warning messages sent.
4) Have the notebook checked by a PC shop or somebody that really knows what they are doing.
5) Dowload netmonitor from here http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=get13
6)Download netlimiter monitor here http://www.netlimiter.com/download/nl_2010_mon.exe
7) Install above downloaded programs
8) Connect to the Internet, that is if he still has the 3G/hsdpa connection.
9) Start these 2 programs and monitor the activity on the Internet and see who the culprit is.

N/B if he new about the risks he would not have allowed the account to go that high.

With all due respect the majority of new the New South Africa donot understand the mechanics & technology around PC/Internet?Wireless etc. It is our Jobs as people in the know to teach them help them etc.

Thanks Csnoopy I will relay the message.
Bruce

Another point, the cell providers were one step ahead of Telkom with Voice mailboxes. The good old Telkom followed eventually, after they realised how much more revenue was generated by charging somebody for a connection, instead of declining the connection.

Now Vodacom got ahead of Telkom again, an outrageous charge for out of bundle rates. Once again I belief that the Telkom capping system is better for the consumer. It does not deem to make outrageous profits from their system and I can buy extra gigs at a fair rate, if I so want to,

When are they going to follow suit?

If capping is wrong, then I think that Vodacoms system is even more wrong, morally as well! Maybe this should be referred to the consumer council.

And please, I do not support Telkom.

And since everybody is using the car example again(only in South Africa does broadband = car???):

My car have a very VISIBLE device that indicates in real time(not updated 3 hours later) how much fuel I have left, as well as the rate of my consumption. When it comes to near its end, I have to judge whether I stop and fill up again(which will give me a further distance) stop driving or drive on.

When I drive on and do not have fuel left, my car will come to a grinding halt until I find a method of putting fuel into it.

He did but did you give him the tools to do it ??? How was he suppose to see that there is continues activity on his Internet connection?

It's common practise nowadays if you buy a 4x4 or hightech car you get a free invite to a drivers training session, so how about it when you buy a new PC/notebook etc.

Iam3g. Are u there to provide the customer a service??? Does it not make you feel good that you have warned a customer about the risks ???

My service here is to give support to customers with their problems around 3G. I'm not a center for training these people. I even had a few of them ask me to teach them.

As for the 4x4 driving session idea... teaching someone to drive a car and explaining the terminolgy of it is greatly different to teaching someone the inn's and out's of using a PC, ESPECIALLY the terminology.

What a dumbass comparison. The car thing isn't a direct comparison to internet access... its like saying that you deserve training on everything you buy. When he bought the computer used to rack up the 10k bill, did he get training on that? How about the mouse, did he get free training on using that?

If he knew he was going to need help/training he should have asked for it before the damage was done. Simple.

That too!! Why are we comparing the internet and using a PC, to driving a car???

To v3g:

Bulletin Number - 07 - 0307
Subject: Call Limit/Data Bundle Notification Delay(for contract customers)

Could this be why he didnt get warned? He was connected for 3days on end and recieved no sms to the VMC dashoard? Or at least he cant remember getting one

As before, ignorance is not an excuse. Say he bought his PC from Incredible Corruption... and he format the harddrive, or fiddled in the BIOS, upping his CPU's running speed (lamance temrs) and eventually overheating and frying the CPU, is he going to hold IC responsible because they didn't give him training?

Using the 4x4 example above, if the purchaser didn't get a free 4x4 course (i didn't), and gets stuck in the mud, or rolls the car on a hill accent/decent is he going to hold the car dealer responsible? Nope.

Most definitely the one is an Electronic device and the other is a Car. But you are introducing him to the pro's & con's of what ever he has just bought.

It is your repsonsibility to provide the customer with the best possible service. Informing the customer will not make you any the poorer. In fact you will get more customers because of your support and attitude

I did not say anything about teaching. Read the post.

You sell phones/modems all the time. How many times do you tell or show the customer how his phone/modem and show them how it works?

As far as I remember I have not said anything about training. I have always said Inform, tell the customer about the risks etc.

True, but again I say If he new what the risks were he would never have built up a bill of R10,000.

As Bruce had said previously the guy screams for help & what does he get, wacked on the head. I doubt it if he will go to IAM3G for support.

Anybody that does the above knows what they are doing. Try another one.

You obviously gave the impression you knew everthing about 4x4 driving.

v3g mentioned in another thread that there is suppose to be a leaflet/pamphlet in the Vodashops explaining some of the howto.

How'd I give the impression I know everything ab out 4x4 driving? I hadn't a clue when I bought mine... I traded in a Golf 4. The only place that I saw giving a free course with the sale was Landrover.

W.R.T. the pc comparision... not everybody that does the above knows what they're doing, they might think they know what they're doing, but they don't. You know how many people I've had to help that have done something similiar to the example? They read it somewhere, and think its easy... until nothing works.

Since everyone loves these analogies, here is another analogy: let's say you go to a shop to buy a toilet seat [maybe your toilet seat broke], does the toilet seat salesperson need to tell you anything about your toilet and the potential dangers of using your toilet, or that you need to use some %toilet-duck% to keep the toilet bowl clean?

PS: In that scenario the actual toilet is Microsoft Windoze, and malware is the germs etc that accumulate around the toilet bowl, and the toilet seat is any Internet connection...

This is great. It's been gardens, water, cars, and toilets. What next. Oh no that is a very bad analogy. We all grew up with toilets. We were trained, informed, shown and the rest so you cannot say that you did not know.
This whole lot is starting smell.

Oh by the way does anybody know what happened to Bruce's friend?

Yeh...he's right on this one... hopefully your parents gave you training on toilet use.

Firstly, i dont sell these things as i'm no sales consultant. How many times? i dont. Its called the USER MANUAL. The customer also cant expect a sales consultant to sit there for a few hours showing them how their device works? What about other customers that need to be helped??

The whole point of the retail industry is to produce a fast effective service to keep customers happy. Look at it from the retail store owners point of view... time = money. alot of time = loss of money. So... alot of time spent on training/informing/turoring the customer = bad for business.

Anybody that does the above knows what they are doing. Try another one.

Guess again. You get those people who DO fiddle around with their stuff catching on k@k. Then what? Are they going to blame the PC tech becoz he/she didnt INFORM them? Hypothetically speaking... why was he scratching around with things he knew nothing of??

True, but again I say If he new what the risks were he would never have built up a bill of R10,000.

I wouldnt need to give him any support becoz he clearly knew what he was doing. As bruce000 said, his friend had his AV up to date and running.

The fact remains, he left his connection active for 3days. That was his decision.

... I think Bruce's friends need to have a chat with Vodacom, he is responsible and needs to accept that, but it is a fairly honest mistake, its not like he got 10k's worth of MP3s, games, etc.

If they can see he didn't get anything out of it then the best customer service point of view would be a fine of sorts and lesson learnt. Making him pay the 10k might be a bit unreasonable if they can see it was accidental, they could charge him their cost..

They asked my friend to take his Laptop in to our local Vodashop. He is still awaiting feedback from them. PS. There were no viruses found that could have caused this.

Ask them for a report on where the data went... like what websites... they need to be able to tell you that...
