very good question. How do we actually know its a Virus? Becoz Vodacom said it "May" be? He says his AV is up to date and running 24/7.

What if its a Rootkit? I've come across some nasty ones. And rootkits can only be picked up by Rootkit Detection software, as far as i know. And can only also be removed by that software.

Yeah I have come across some extremely nasty rootkits and hijacks on people's computers over the years. There is however certainly some very nasty stuff doing the rounds these days.

I am connected 24/7 every month and never had this problem. I run a monitoring app locally and I set warnings of when I am reaching my bundle limit. Never experienced any form of DOS/DDOS attack on Vodacom's network in over 3 years so it is probably something nasty hiding on your friends PC. A lot of these system hijacks / rootkits nowadays are excellent at hiding from rootkit finders, they also evade antivirus software with the greatest of ease and spamware/adware software with equal ease.

What if Vodacom could introduce a feature on vodacom4me which allows users to set a max limit, which they can adjust as they need. So let's say you have a 500 Mb bundle and you are willing to go use up to 1Gb in a month, you can set your max usage as 1000 Mb and after 1000 Mb you will not be able to do anything unless you change the limit or phone 155 or something like that.

Could be another administrative nightmare for Vodacom but certainly food for thought.

One of the easiest preventions against picking these things up is to load Mozilla Firefox and then load the "NoScript" extension for Mozilla which blocks any script running on any web site. You then have to enable scripts on a per web site basis and only on sites you trust. This just plain stops everything in its tracks.

The mythical friend is still awaited:D

They only had my friends Notebook for a couple of hours. As I said they found no viruses that could have done this to him. I don't think my Mythical :Dfriend will post here as it looks as if I am more interested in what happened then he is. But I will keep you posted.

Wireless OOB 3G

Vodacom really need to get there act together on this one. This better be sooner than later. I personally believe that more of this is occuring than meets the eye. I know for a fact that the SP we have signed up with over the last 3 months have had at least 4 persons per month going into OOB at thousand of rands a time. Vodacom should allow SP users to have full access to all the services available via vodacom4me. He should be sent a sms reminder to his cell phone reminding him to sign up on vodacom4me and setup his warning systems. If he does not do it then there should be a default settings already made. This has nothing to do with training, education but with providing a service. It protects the provider & the user. If Vodacom knows about the risks and have already had to write of many thousands of Rands why have they not put some systems in place to warn potential buyers of the risks in going the contract way with OOB at rediculous rates. I have noticed that the wise people on the forum are using PPDB, I wonder why. By there influence I have also decided to use PPDB. The argument stops right there about what if I am downloading a 100Meg file and I suddenly get stopped on the contract system because I have been blocked? But with PPDB it happens, Am I correct in saying so?. Oh by the way how is it possible that PPDB can give up to date stats but CDB can not or am I missing something somewhere? Come on guys let's not fight each but get a beter system out there that will work for everybody.

There are enought wise people on this Forum that can put something together that can work for everybody.

(How is Vodacom going to handle Iburst)

We all are. We aint gonna give up now to much has already been said. So the responsibility is now on your shoulders. :D :p

LOD

We all know that HSDPA modems are still quite expensive in SA, but my feeling is that if you want to avoid a hefty bill, the best way to go, is to buy the modem outright [e.g. on credit card budget] and then use PPDBs. If everyone started doing that, then Vodacom would be forced to sort out the problems associated with using CDBs.

LOD Loss of data.

That is a great idea if you are given the option during POP (point of purchase) and not get tied into a 24 month contract with no way out. They will not market this option because they will loose revevue. My not so favourite SP @atlantic is now selling modems with PPDB's. You can now also purchase refurbed hsdpa modems from goggaconnect for R799-999 with 1year warrentee.

The way I see this is : if iBurst can cap their lower-bandwidth users then surely Vodacom can do the same?

There's going be some issues this month at my company - one laptop's 3Gb data card was used up to 8Gb... >.<

So, it is up to Vodacom to provide a capped service (by default), and for the customer to decide whether to cap or uncap it. If the customer decides to go uncapped, then the onus is on the customer to make sure he/she doesn't go over his/her data limit.

Personally I would prefer a hardcapped system, will be a lot irritating if you do get capped, but at least you've got the security of knowing that it won't blow your budget out of the water.

You can request a capped service if you want, its just up to the customer to request it, not unreasonable IMO.

1) Who is your Service Provider? If you are a direct Vodacom contract subscriber then I believe some of these option are already in place. They just need to be setup.
2) By default it should be capped Finito. The user should then have the option of setting this value in Rand amount.

Blow your budget out of the bank and your Family.

ADSL accounts are capped and then you have to buy another bundle. There is no such thing as oob there.

IMO, an account that is capped by default is much better for everyone --> the customer does not faint/ almost die of a heart attack when they receive their bill and VC avoids any legal wrangles to get their bill paid.

True but I presume as a cell company Vodacom presumably based their billing on that model. I'm just saying you have the option to cap your account if you want to. Some ADSL accounts do also have auto-topup etc. options.

So simple so easy they must just do it.

@ic,@sky.akash. Please put together a poll to vote for everbody to move over to PPDB. Let the hackers move all CDB's to PPDB's and cancel all debit orders with immediate effect. Whack them a bit where it hurts, in the pocket. :D :D :p :p :p

ic is the mod, not me:) Therefore ic has the power to create the poll you requested @Csnoopy. But I agree that PPDB are much safer without any unexpected nasties:D

The other PPDB advantage is that they expire after 30 days rather than at the end of the month, which gives you a bit more flexibility.
