My cousin seems to have picked up a pretty bad virus. Here's what it has done so far:

1. It uninstalled/corrupted his anti-virus.
2. It disabled his wireless and bluetooth.
3. His restore points don't work. PC tells him the points aren't working.
4. When he tries to start in save mode his PC just restarts.
5. When he tries to install a new/different anti-virus program it gets to about 95%, stops, then rolls back the installation.

Does he have any hope or is it format-reinstall central?

thats the scary bit

try disabling all non-windows activity

re-format
re-install
make an image
store on separate partition

next time this happes restore the image.

OR

get an umbrella,
remove infected hard disc,
connect on 2nd pc with latest virus updates
open the umbrella
switch on 2nd pc
scan infected hard disc.
throw away umbrella
return cleaned disc back to cousins pc
start pc
backup your data files

re-format
re-install
make an image
store on separate partition

next time this happes restore the image.

Forgive my ignorance, but where do you go to do this?

More ignorance from my side...... umbrella?

Ideally format, but if thats not possible:

Backup data.
Remove the AV. Its just interfering atm.
Switch of restore points.
Delete old restore points
install firewall to prevent virus from calling home
scan with online kaspersky virus scan.
Install spybot.
Check all the start-up locations and remove anything dodgy.

Use this to check whats cooking on the PC.

Incase the SH*T hits the fan and spl*tters all over the second pc, u dont wanna be in the way :p

the thing is once the pc gets infected, even if a virus cleaner does a good job and removes the malware, the registry settings that have been modified are too daunting and time consuming to rectify. Some are deleted altogether.

As long as the data is safe, reformat, make a separate partition for your data and operating system. This is to make it easy to make an image and restore next time u need that umbrella :-)

@HavocXphere: The virus seems to have messed up his ability to go online.
Then you use a second PC connect that PC to the internet and map all the infected drives to the second PC via network. You'll need the admin password though or admin rights.

Allright, the trojan (as it turns out) was on his laptop and he's managed to sort it out, but he'll have to re-install as was suggested.

Thanks to all who helped out. :)

maleware alarm by any chance..and variants of that:D
i had that, i formatted and started over:sick::o

Usually REINSTALLING Windoze alone after booting up from the installation CD/DVD is good enough. Then scan through the entire HD with the latest AV software.

Run Windoze next time as a non-Administrator user.
