Need some help ASAP. One of the kids brought a friends portable harddrive from school to install some game on the wifes PC. The harddrive had some Virut virus on and it infected the wife's PC. She is running NOD32 (updated version).

What is the best way to remove this virus. NOD32 has quarantined most of the infected files but with every re boot there is some more infectons that NOD is having problems to clean.

Help please !

Clean the virus
remove restore points
restart PC
check that it's still clean
select restore points again

you might wanna check for malware &/or spyware too.

Malwarebytes can be used.

PS. When removing the restore point option also make sure you delete the historic restore points.

Ah, Virut! Have not seen that baby in a couple of years. The best cleaner for Virut for me was Dr Web - Cureit http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/?lng=en - only antivirus that was able to clean some of my infected files, and not just delete them outright. Edit: (And it is a free app!)

this virus was bad, one of the worst i've encountered. I was unable to clean the PC. I scanned with NOD32, Spyboy S&D, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and even a Symantec tool specifically made for cleaning this virus. All of them found something and cleaned most of the infected files, but with each reboot it became worse. I learned that Virut scans and infects each .exe file on your PC. It does this so well that my virus cleaning software got infected and i couldn't clean it any longer. At this point I had already spent a day trying to clean it and wasn't get anywhere close to completely removing the virus.

Format reinstall was the only option.

this is basically the same route i had to go as well... that was a nasty virus....

Had a breakout in a 150PC Call center once with this bugger.

Safe Mode, put the AVG Virut cleanup tool on an intranet FTP,ran direct from FTP ( to prevent the cleaner being infected ). Any locked and in-use files and it prompts to reboot and clean them. Took 2-3days to clean all the PCs

That's why i said deactivate restorepoints & remove historic restore points.

Then only allow it to create restorepoints once cleaned...

The problem was the PC could not get to a 'clean' state, so the restore point suggestion wouldn't have helped.

Came across this a while ago, kaspersky have a tool on their website specially for the virut virus, google it, did the trick for me! My outbreak was over 30+ desktops in one office!

virutkiller.exe from Kaspersky. Download it for free. Run in safe mode and in normal mode. After files have been cleaned install Symantec Norton 2011 with latest updates. Done.
