I am back to using the Huawei software which NEVER crashes ... not once in 4 months has it ever given me a glitch.

Can you perhaps provide a link to the Huawei software u are using? I'd be keen to try it out but if I go to the Huawei site they do not even list my card (E630) in their datacard section, only the E620.

Thanks
Simon

can anyone help

I have a e220 on vista ultimate HP Compaq 7400 no problem with drivers they have all installed fine i can detect the card and pick up the vodacom 3g network but when i try connect it just saying connecting and then eventually gives me a error that says the server is not responding i have tried to do all firmware updates, tried with VMC 9.1, Tried with VodaLite, tried with Huawei mobile connect, even tried with MTN.

No problem with USB or SIM works on XP machine

at the moment i am trying Huawei mobile connect and it just says server not responding in a timely fashion.

tried under multiple user accounts and have now tried all the configs on the admin account still no luck

even tried a clean load of vista

any help would be appreciated

@native: I believe the version 8 of the software is only for the embedded 3G notebooks. If you have the red datacard or USB modem, you need to use version 7 (for XP) or version 9 (for XP or Vista).

But maybe someone can confirm if this new version 8 software is compatible with Vista on the embedded notebooks?

Hi Marek,
I had this problem and installed/re-installed Vodafone Mobile Connect, but no luck. Vodacom helpdesk is useless as well... they don't even respond to my requests for support.

So... I figured that there may be an SMS on the vodacom simcard that was not able to be displayed using the VMC sms software.
I took out the vodacom Sim Card and put it into a cellphone. There was an SMS, and I deleted it.
I put the sim card back in to the laptop and whoopeeee the error went away.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip, worked hundreds!

I have the Latitute D620 and running version 8.03.0017.0

The E220 out the box isn't recognized by Vista, so I followed these instructions on the vodaphone page. Vodacom help line was of 0 help.

http://www.business.vodafone.com/si.../general/microsoft/vista/30_modem/p_modem.jsp

I went through this process to upgrade the firmware and software on the E220 modem... everything reported success, and this time when I plug it into a VISTA laptop, it actually detects the device and loads the software. Not like out the box where Vista has no clue.

The error I get when I try connect though is : "Need to be on a vodaphone network"

Anybody else try this and get connected on VISTA.

Thanks

The sim card wasn't making a good connection, works fine now

I've found that the new batch of USB Modems already has the Vista firware done to it.

On the other hand, i still have to use the workaround to get it working. All it installs is the CD-ROM and the USB Mass Storage Device. And then it installs the software. Then i've to manually install the modem and interface drivers.

Help with 3G card/PCMCIA adaptor

Hi all
I've upgraded to Vista Ultimate edition from XP Pro. A very straightforward process, and so far it seems all applications are fine (even game data!). Problems with 3G though.

I upgraded the Option (Nozomi) card's firmware to the latest version before starting, and subsequently also installed latest v9 VMC.

The connection to 3G is very slow, and I'm not getting the speeds I had previously (not even close!). I have not benchmarked speed (at this level you know it's slower). Also it "flip-flops" constantly between 3G and HSDPA (according to VMC indicator), and loses connection regularly.

I suspect the PCI - PCMCIA cardbus driver is at fault here. On XP I used the supplied Pseries drivers from the manufacturer (ELAN), which worked properly. Vista installed it's own driver (ENE PCI1410) in the upgrade, which I am now using. I downloaded (thankfully my 3G phone works with Vista) the latest Vista Pseries driver from ELAN, which installed fine. However, as soon as I plugged the 3G card in, Vista crashed mightily (BSOD). So that driver's no good - had to roll back to a system restore point. So 3G works, but limited.

Has anybody out there had any experience yet with any of these components on Vista, i.e. the Option Nozomi card using a PCI-PCMCIA adaptor (ELAN, ENE 1410 chipset, Ricoh 1410 chipset)? Are some adaptors better for Vista (and where do you get them - Vodashops say they don't keep them anymore, and most computer retailers don't seem to have them either).

Also, any tips/advice on Vista crashes caused by 3G card insertion?

Sure could use some help here - I'm right out of ideas and I've gleaned nothing useful from Google.

Regards
Graham

Sounds like you already know the primary suspect; the PCMCIA adaptor.

Most PC shops (here in Cpt, at least) sell some version based on the Ricoh chipset. These seem to work well.

Just as a completely different view; Put the 3G sim in your phone and check for, and delete, any SMS's. Heard some weird stories about stored SMS's and VM9......

Options Colt Drivers

For anyone still using the Options Colt 3G Card, the latest Vodafone Mobile Connect available from the Vodacom website has the correct drivers for this card. I also found this version of the software a lot more stable then previous releases, in fact I have had no crashed so far.

The latest version is 9.1.2.x

Hi V3G

Any idea when there will be downloads for the E630 for Vista? I had an old E620 which hung in my Dell D820. After a bit of a battle with VodaCare they finally gave me a new card, but I can't seem to find a set of drivers that work.

I've tried the latest mobile connect from Hauwei (E630-HOSTB202D03SP00C03) and Vodacom (9.1.2.5766). Digging around on the vodafone.com site it looks like vmc_r9.1.0.4345 is supposed to have support for the E630. I'm busy waiting for it to download, but if that does not work I'm out of ideas.

Huawei E630 working with Vista and VMC 9.1.2!!

Ok I managed to get this working. Below are the rather detailed steps. There are probably places where you can skip reboots and uninstalls of VMC. This is what worked for *me*. As always YMMV (Your Milage May Vary).

Dowload latest Vodafone Mobile Connect (VMC) Setup-9.1.2.5766
Dowload E630 drivers only here (if you trust me) or get the full package from Huawei if you have bandwidth to spare (the drivers are inside the mobile connect ISO). Note: The download script seems to lose the .zip extension, so you want to add that to the file to be able to open it.
Uninstall VMC, if installed
Reboot (if you uninstalled VMC)

Insert E630
Windows will prompt you if you want to to find drivers | select: Ask Me Later
Click Start | Right Click Computer | Manage
Expand Device Manager | Other Devices
Right Click HUAWEI Mobile | Update Driver Software
Browse My Computer for Driver Software | Let me pick from a list of devices on my computer | Modems
You will see Huawei in the list, but rather click Have Disk. Browse to the drivers you downloaded and select: ewser2k.inf
Select HUAWEI Mobile Connect - 3G Modem | Next
Windows will warn you about the driver | Yes
You should get a success screen | Close
Device Manager will refresh and it move to Modems. Driver Details should be
Provider: HUAWEI Incorporated
Date: 2007/04/12
Version: 2.0.3.8
Reboot

Install VMC
Reboot

The VMC device setup will launch (if it does not there is a VMC icon on your desktop). It took a while to detect the card completing at least one full pass (YMMV).
It should find the card as it is listed in Device Manager: HUAWEI Mobile Connect - 3G Modem
Tadaa! You should be able to connect now.

You can probably do away with VMC completely and use the Mobile Connect software supplied in the full download of the Huawei supplied package. I did not test this.

I swapped PC - PCMCIA cards and tried a Ricoh chipset card - it seems to be much better!

A question for V3G

Regarding this VMC ver 9 software - I know it's new and bugs are still being sorted out (I hope!), but is there a way of getting some feedback to the developers for consideration?

A couple of things I've noticed:
  1. If you open an instance under a user profile (Vista) and switch users without shutting VMC down (Exit) it won't restart under another profile. Under XP you could still kill off the process (in Task Manager), but under Vista it doesn't even show up under Task Manager processes. (It would be even better if the task could work between users, without exiting). In fact, I recollect that ver 7 asks if you want VMC to be available to other users - ver 9 doesn't ask that.
  2. The performance information - it displays "kbps" "bps" and "mbps" but I'm not sure if it's bits or bytes
  3. It would be useful to have performance information and usage stats together in the reduced display, and have the ability to "pin" to the desktop as a monitor.
  4. We don't seem to have the option of choosing 3G exclusively (i.e. no GPRS) as it was in previous versions

It might also be an idea for the developers to put a link under the "Help" tag for users to send ideas.
