Vista vs XP, Preference?

1GB on Vista is like Running 512mb on windows XP

As I am writing this Post Vista is using 50% of my 4GB total

I ran it quite happily with 1GB. It'll always use around ~50% of your memory unless you're running other apps or if you have less than ~1GB memory. Like XP, vista also uses more resources when more are available. Vista manages its memory usage very well; better than XP afaik

So you want us to rate which we would rather use:

1. if both of them were working perfectly, and
2. had the optimum hardware to run both?

The clear winner would be Vista given that in theory it is an improvement on XP features. However as this thread shows the theory is different to the reality.

I have tried Vista on a P4 2.6GHz with 1GB RAM (for about a month). Performance wasn't too bad. But given that was shortly after Vista was released and there was still plenty hardware problems, I stuck with XP and have not looked back. I still don't feel like I am missing out on anything.

Maybe I'm missing the point here... (yes I did have Vista on my machine)..

I don't play the latest games (I'm a fan of emulation), I prefer office 2003 over 2007 in terms of interface, I don't use media player ever (VLC and winamp for me), I mainly use my pc for blogging, music, and music creation (of which my software is not compatible with vista)....

I'm still waiting for someone to give me 1 really good reason to install Vista on my machine.... In what way would it benefit me spending the money on a new OS

Vista is cool, looking fwd to service pack.
XP is a-ok, good n stable as most folks have pointed out. If youve used Vista for a bit you'll feel the sting of going back though.

How many DX10 (only) games have you played lately?



I will probably never really use Vista, I've had it on my machine dual booting with XP and it's been months since I've booted into Vista. I've used linux more than Vista and I'm no fan of linux due to not being able to play games in it.

The only thing I liked about Vista was the GUI (at least it's appearance, it's design was to infuriating to put up with), untill I bothered trying to make XP look like it. The only thing Vista's GUI has over a modified XP are the little bars to show how full a disk is, which no doubt could be done in XP but it doesn't bother me.

Hate to sound like a teenage "leet" idiot, but Vista sucks.
