Vitamin D supplement ?

What is 'wrong' with you that you are seeing a clinical dietician if you don't mind me asking?

Five years ago I had an idiopathic acute pancreatic attack. Rather messed up my health and a long journey to recovery.

I'm on a eating plan to help with health issues and to control my weight. Don't underestimate the value of what you put into your body.

Also exercise, lots and lots of exercise.

I don't know what you mean by "sulfated". There's only really two forms of Vitamin D that matter, the synthetic D2 form sold by the pharmaceuticals and the natural D3. The natural form is derived from sunlight and cholesterol so it's actually the same.

Synthetic forms of vitamin D3 are typically unsulfated forms of vitamin D, while the vitamin D produced by the sun is 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 3 beta-sulphate. This is a water-soluble form of 25(OH)D3 – sometimes referred to as vitamin D3-sulfate.

I take a vitamin D3 (1000 IU per tablet) supplement made by Solal.

First time I hear about sulfate. Sounds like some trace element that someone discovered and now thinks it's the main form produced by our bodies. What's actually produced is cholecalciferol which is actually a form of cholesterol. This is metabolised to 25-OH vitamin D3 and 1,25-(OH)2 vitamin D3.

Fun fact. Omega 3's and 6's have the same working as vitamin D. It's thought that they decouple vitamin D from its binding protein to produce a working form. They don't have an effect on middle eastern women however. The idea is that perhaps they just don't have enough vitamin D to unbind to begin with.

Placebo. What I found works is to crush 5 of them and take with something fatty.

I buy mine from myprotein.co.za. it still gets shipped from overseas. Under R300 including customs if you place a big order and get free delivery. R300 for 360 softgels(2500iu), I take 2 a day. I've done per and post blood tests to confirm my levels have increased.

Hmm... transparent bottle. You should paint it black and make sure it never sees sunlight.

What were your pre and post levels if you don't mind saying?

Money making scam. Next year they will say those pills do not get absorbed and you must take some other tablet that you won't piss out.
Just get your ass outside in the sun and eat more oily fish. Pilchards in chilly sauce and salmon is great. Not sure if you get wild salmon there but do not have butterfish. You will be embarrassed for 3 days as the oil cannot be absorbed by the human gut.

Pre- tests were more than 2 years ago and it was less than 12, can't find my tests on the lancet app for tests between 2014-2017.

This is my test done in Jan 2019, usually do a full blood workup in Jan every year.

In this, case skin color does make a difference. Dark skin people don't produce as much vitamin d for the same amount of sun. I would need to stand in the sun for 30 minutes a day without my shirt to get the required amount......No time for that, I work during the day.

Yes this is one reason postulated for why white people were able to trek north out of Africa. Black people who did would suffer from deficiencies and die from diseases in the cold north.

That's not too bad but the advantages only start above 50 ng. 20 ng being sufficient is severely outdated. There's no linear relation between intake and blood levels and your body will use more the more you have. 100 ng/ml is still a healthy level and real toxicity only starts showing above 150. I don't know why so many health professionals shy away from achieving a healthy level and see it as too high.

Any ideas which might be best ?
Preferably a decent daily dose - 600 to 1000 IU whatever that means...
Seems different brands have different ingredients ?? Why ?
Ex Dischem if possible, Clicks if I must.
Thanks.
what are your current blood levels? This will give you an indication of how much you need to replace

More is not always better, especially with the fat-soluble vitamins

500 IU won't cut it. At least get gelcaps but really nothing under 8000 IU will maintain sufficient levels near the 60's
