Vodacom ‘double data’ warning

****.. even telkom don't charge you when they screw up and give you more than you paid for

So true,in fact people using helkom asdl were downloading over 70gb's with their glitch and they were not charged.
Imagine if somebody with hsdpa started downloading like crazy, only to discover a massive bill!
I reckon the customer would have a valid case.

Its a dangerous glitch!

As an ex-MTN customer, all I can say is that I honestly dont care if they have the odd glitch in their system as long as they let me know timeously. At least their data network doesnt fall on its butt every 2 seconds

If Vodacom tells you you have 4GB you have reasonable expectation of that and its not then unreasonable to expect an average person to use that much.
It's not unheard of promotions happening which give bonus bundles or extras or perhaps cap increases.

The blame is on Vodacom entirely here.

If you make a mistake, you're responsible for it.

Agreed, its almost like false advertising, but without the E&OE escape clause. Its a tracking system that THEY offer, and if THIER system says you have x amount data available then you can reasonably expect to receive x amount and should be well within your rights to use all of it.

Oh... so if I draw money at an ATM and a bank "glitch" stated I had double the money... THE LAW states that im not liable and do not have to give it back... So what makes VC different?

LoL @ DJ... exactly... "What would Dot have said..."

Oh believe me you will give every cent back. The law's not on your side here. ;)

Cmon, people. We're living on Planet Earth, filled with Human Beings, not infallible angels. Every human person fails in some way every day. I am Exhibit A.

Hands up anyone who's never screwed up in some way.

When mistakes happen, the best is to own up, apologise, and work hard to fix it. That takes humility and sometimes guts. Vodacom have shown both. What more do you expect, for heaven's sake.

you know what happens if I screw up at work. It costs ME money. I don't get to bill my client for the screwup to cover my loss.

you suck it up and you take the knock. simple.

Quite right, of course.

But what if you made a billing screw-up and some customers paid others refused to pay anything? It's easy with a few customers, but with hundreds of thousands this takes time. You'd first check out your systems, admit there's a problem, contact your customers, and then work to resolve the issues. That's just what Vodacom are doing.

The mistake is in the system that feeds the automated billing system, so incorrect invoices can be sent out. Vodacom have been pretty humble in openly acknowledging they messed up and are working to fix it. I'm sure they will. And until we have clear evidence to the contrary, the sensible thing to do is to give them the time and opportunity to do so.

Simple.

What more do people expect?

If you are using vodacom for internet, mostly your limited and check your usage often, you also know you only signed up for x-amount, trouble is we get screwed so much at the first sniff of getting something nice we go for it without thinking we live in Africa and it may come back and bite us :D

Sorry, wrong here. If you are AWARE that you have "glitch" in your favour then you cannot use it. If you do then you must pay for it. VC is correct in billing you if you know they have given you too much in error. Same for banks.

MTN has a different problem. People where not AWARE that their DATA counters where incorrect and where working the internet accordingly.

incidentally that happened with the blue bank about 6 years back where customers could withdraw via the ATM and the system didn't reduce the available limit - guess what, everyone had to give the money back.

Looking forward to the moaners here to find your wallet/phone/sunglasses - will keep it, seeing that it was your fault :)

Vodacom have shown both. What more do you expect, for heaven's sake.

Not charge someone extra who used the cap they gave him.

That is what I'd expect from a reasonable person or company. That's what I get from overseas companies.

I've had US, European and Japanese shops send me wrong items, they re-shipped free of charge upon finding out they sent me the wrong items and they even let me keep the old stock instead of having to send it back. Of course I continued with these shops buying from some for more than several years. This would be akin to a shop sending you the wrong item, asking to have it sent back (my cost) and then charging me a shipping fee to send a replacement.

In this instance however, VodaCOM does not loose money, they just don't make any extra. Those extra electrons I consumed did not cause their wiring to rot or their transmitter fuses to blow. If people don't see how big an F-YOU this is to customers (charging out of bundle for that extra cap) - I don't know.

I RECALL THAT EVEN TELKOM DIDN'T CHARGE PEOPLE FOR THE EXTRA B/W PEOPLE USED LAST WEEK.

This is hardly a valid comparison. Vodacom did not loose anything if someone downloaded 4 GB instead of 2. The bank in question issued money - they lost the money. Vodacom is not loosing money in lost electrons or equipment wear and tear. They did not have to put up extra towers or cable because for a few days some people used more CAP than otherwise.

Abroad if the shop messes up, they pay for the mistake. I've seen it so many times. I could write a book about it - but then again they actually want you as a customer. LOL VC couldn't care less, I guess. I'll stay with Cell-C.

I'm sorry but how would you be AWARE that that extra B/W isn't some promo. Some people have busy lives and don't go online or call their provider for every little thing. They have a contract and expect things to work.

Tell me when Vodacom or your ISP messes up and the network is down and you have to use a Telkom line to call, who pays for that call even though the mistake isn't yours?

In a free market customers who VC will now double charge would go to a competitor.

Don't agree with this. Surely VC is paying for backhaul capacity on this. True, they will collect the money from the customer, but it is equally each customer's responsibility to validate this. People (KNOWINGLY) used bandwidth they should not have to begin with, and then complain that they get charged.

If I was Telkom, I would have charged people for using the extra bandwidth too. I see it the same way as one would let the water/electricity run and then complain that Joburg-Water/Eskom should have turned off the supply - it's easy to "overlook" responsibility in favour of personal/financial gain - not a good moral standing in my opinion.

Checking your cap should be 2nd nature (like checking your bank-account / credit card statement).

The responsibility is on the provider to provide the information accurately. They said 4GB, people used 4GB. Do you now expect people to waste time and money by phoning, emailing or faxing? Also do you think the call operator would know if the error occurred in real time? And if they knew in real time then why not reverse that 4GB immediately back to 2GB.

What you are suggesting is ridiculous. You are saying that the customer who is PAYING the company to do all these things and to have accurate data given to him now has to verify things on his own time by speaking to people who probably at that stage would not have been able to verify his extra data anyway?

I'm sorry but maybe that's how it works in corrupt, monopolistic SA but if a company did this in the EU they'd have no leg to stand on. A customer pays and company is supposed to use that money to ensure mistakes do not happen and if mistakes happen the company needs to bear those expenses - because if I were to forget to pay VodaCom they'd cut me off and charge me interest - they wouldn't let me off so easily.

Sorry - Vodacom is a fail here. They are again showing contempt for their customers.

Yes it is easy but it is reasonable. People don't have time and it is fair and reasonable to expect the company YOU ARE PAYING to ensure a proper service that means they give you the bandwidth they say they will. Promotions and carry-over rules change all the time, it's not unreasonable to expect that someone may have thought this was some carry over or extra data or maybe the introduction of a caps increase - after all when you're busy earning the MONEY you will be paying to VODACOM you don't have time to check every single thing.

This did not cost VC anything. The backhaul is theirs and even if not, they don't get charged by the MB - they get charged for the connection - a flat rate. They didn't have to install extra towers and as said electrons are free.

And even if it did cost VC something, that's tough. That's part of doing business, if you cut costs to make bigger profits expect some of these cut costs to translate into occasional greater expenses - such as now.

Checking your cap should be 2nd nature (like checking your bank-account / credit card statement).

The cap said 4GB not 2GB. The fault is with the provider here. And if I was your customer I'd tell all my associates and friends about you and we'd all dump you in a second.

You're saying it's OK for Vodacom to make a mistake which they shouldn't pay for but a customer may NOT make mistakes and if he does he has to pay for them.
Having customers is a privilege and not a right.

They have such a promotion running at the moment. If you load a prepaid data bundle you receive 10% extra with a minimum of 25MB. So buying a 20MB bundle gives you 45MB. Offer valid until end of July.

My guess is that this "offer" is partly responsible for the glitch.

Well pay the bill if its a system error and u used the data then pay. tell me of a system that does not have errors, even NASA has mistakes. At least Vodacom acknowledge its is system error n take responsibilty. Then why use something that you does not belong to u bkz of an error. Will u use money deposited by your bank in error. NO coz that will thieft.
I know bandwidth is still expensive in SA, but you shouldn't compare it with cash/banks.

If you buy a BigMac at the drive through, get home and notice two burgers in the packet, what will you do?
Even if you did take it back, McD's will either not accept it or throw it away.
