Vodacom 3G vs NeoGo

I currently have a 1GB contract with Vodacom at R349. Neotel now offers a similar wireless service, 1.5GB for R299. Also, Neotel's out of bundle rate is 8c per MB which is way way lower than Vodacoms R1.20 per MB out of bundle rate.

Should we expect a price drop/increase in bandwidth from Vodacom now? I dont see any reason to stay with Vodacom especially due to the high out of bundle rate. Two months ago I got burned with a R850 bill because I went a couple of hundred MBs over the 1GB allowance.

R80 for 1GB is cheap for wireless. Compare it to Vodacom's R289 for 1GB. I dont see Vodacom being able to compete with a price more than 3 times lower per GB. And that's comparing Neotels out of bundle rate to Vodacoms in bundle rate. If you compare out of bundle rates it's Neotel, R80 for 1GB and Vodacom, R1200 for 1GB. So Neotel is 93% cheaper!


Vodacom may offer a more reliable service for now but how long will the masses be able to justify paying the way higher prices. It's only a matter of time before something drastic happens.
 
Vodacom's advantages are coverage and hardware interoperability and a data roll-over period. (And, if compared to Neotel, greater stability and reliability.)

But otherwise, you'll save a bunch of money if you switch to Neotel's new product.

Just don't take the 24-month contract. Not in this day and age.
 
R1499 for Neotel's data card is pretty crazy though. You are forced to either sign a 24 month contract where the price you agree to pay now (R299) for 2 years seems okay but in one years time it will be very expensive but then you are tied into their crazy contract.

R239 month 2 month for 1.5GB is great but R1499 for the data card? Come on guys... There is always a bloody catch it seems. I'd rather wait a few months. Prices are gonna come down soon.
 
You can get a used modem for much cheaper but will Neotel sign you up if you want to use your own modem?

I paid R2700 for my E272 to use vodacom's 3G, R1499 is dirt Cheap! :eek:

I think I might port too, this Vodacom OOB rates are just silly, like iBurst.

I like the fact that you posted this in the Vodacom section in case the powers that be didn't catch it.
The truth is, 8c per meg speaks volumes about how expensive these bundles[in or out],really are.
Surely they dont expect us to keep paying these excessive amounts of money, when a competitor is charging much less.
Hell, im only as loyal as the prices.
I agree with Keeper about the modem[ps2 is the same price!],unless you are willing to be tied in to a 24 month contract.

I still don't know why many people want a dedicated modem, when most of us have 3G capable phones nowadays?

Sorry I know its off topic, but not completely. Vodacom internet access through my phone FTW.

I hear you,but the pricing is what we need to keep repeating,hence spinning the cogs known as competition.
They cannot be as bad as Virgin mobile anyways.

Neotel has confirmed that you have to buy the modem from them.
I think however you will still be able to buy the aerial directly from Poynting because that is the only way you will receive a signal of any useable level on your USB modem on the Neotel network.
 
well i have been with neotel for a over a year now. and my only gripe is the cap checking. otherwise i am happy with it.

must say this is a step in the right direction.

go neotel. give the other operators hell. :D
 
*sigh* It all comes down to coverage and network reliability. When I get coverage in my area I will seriously consider moving over to them. I am so tired of paying R389 per 2 gigs.
 
I am also sitting with a 1gb vodacom contract which expires in September. Think I should start looking around for better value for money.
 
Im on one gig, for now. the crazy thing is seeing the price differential of the actual modem. I bought mine from hi-fi for R800 seen it at other shops up to R1500 almost double.

Hardware prices are dropping fast nowadays.

You can get a brand new E272 for between R1099 and R1300.

And even the new Nokia E75 sells for about R2000 less than its recommended retail price. Yay!

So, R1499 for a network-locked Neotel device isn't exactly "dirt cheap" but I suppose it's nothing compared to iBurst modems:

Their USB modem is still selling for R2439!

If Neotel's USB dongle modem doesn't feature a portable antenna as well as a port for connecting an external antenna to the modem, then GOOD LUCK to those who buy this device.

Poynting doesn't have a portable omni-antenna for Neotel yet, though the universal adaptor sleeve will come in handy for those in desperate situations.

Ummmm... No I was not referring to a handy little sleeve antenna because that will never pick up enough of Neotels overcontended signal to beat a dial up connection.

I was referring to the metre long Poynting Omni antenna that Neotel are recommending to their fixed clients because I have designed a bracket to attach it to your laptop screen which I was hoping to market to their new "mobile clients"

The sleeve serves only as a coupler/adaptor, it's not an antenna.

Are you referring to the Poynting OMNI-A0069 or the OMNI-A0121 or a different one?
