Vodacom BIS excludes some WhatsApp, MXit data

Tx :), but I really want to know how Marine sees it. I know what changes we made recently and it's all about latency. Yet he seems to say latency was never an issue. :confused:

Well being on BB how would I check the latency? :rolleyes:

I dont care about latency (latency in my mind only matters to me for gaming) on my BB I care about speed. How long it takes to open a god damn page on "3g" while standing in line of sight of a freaking tower.
So what you are saying, then , Is your backend system is falling apart? Everything after the tower I connect to right?

My "latency" as you put it to that tower is not the issue its everything after that tower.
Very easy for you to say that on Android or anything else where you guys are not throttling the network works fine.
Maybe take a BB and try it out.
I have issues even opening Mybb and thats on BIS - 3 separate phones.
I seem to remember about a year ago some promises that your "engineers" would check on the problem with a 2 week turnaround.
Long 2 weeks ;)
Clearly you guys are prioritising everything else but BIS.
Why has MTN not got these issues?
It s a bloody pathetic service. I would rather not have it at all.

As suspected you confuse the two. See HapticSimian's definitions. Latency affect every SINGLE packet you send or receive.

In any case, I've answered your accusations in the VC sub-form.

Wow marine i have no issues with BIS on my cellphone, works awesome.

Fast and awesome is all i can say :D.
 
BIS isn't working for me at all!

It might have something to do with the fact that I don't have a Blackberry. :D

You missing the point. I SAID, if I am right near a tower, in line of sight why should their be latency? The only latency would be on YOUR back end. My "latency" to the tower is nothing it has no effect. My speed to the tower has not effect whatsoever if I have line of sight, un obstructed line of sight.
The issue is not the phone as I have 3 x Blackberry's.
So the issue is with your network.
You can spin it all you want with all your tech jargon but the reality is the network is slow and degraded.
Now don't go and tell me its that particular tower as I have these issues all over.

Now what I did is I selected BIS as the transport and do 3 tests. Then I changed the transport method to cellular - which puts you directly on the cellular network; doing the same 3 tests. I guarantee a HUGE difference. Yes I know the BIS server is in the UK - but I have seen ping times over 5000ms. Would be nice to see your findings.

After asking, the APN for BB on Vodacom should be left blank right? This is according to their help desk, just spoke to Paul at data support.
Internet APN will allow me to use normal 3g and bypass the BIS. As shown in the speedtest menu

Sorry I do not buy that the ping will affect the speeds by such a large difference.

Yip the APN for BB can also be blackberry.net - no username or password. This seems to make no difference though. I think the service books or something still does the routing as needed.

Now if you have a few rand go get a pay-as-you-go sim from the other providers; activate once off BIS and do the same tests on the different networks. I don't want to throw anyone under a bus here - but results vary quite a bit. I think there will be varying results. In my case 1 provider had no coverage at all - but a nice bit of research :).

Going to go and get a sim from MTN, 8ta and check.
Its time to bring this out in the open and do real world tests and see whats really going on.
Do I need to RICA these sims? Probably right?

Yes you do need to RICA. Don't forget CellC.... :). I don't work for them or have any affiliation; but their results were best for me in the area I live in. Like I said it can differ from person to person and area to area.

I think I will hold of until Monday and go and get them as I am sure the shops will be mad today.
