Vodacom email quarantine problems

They have to fill in a username and password to fetch mail anyway, so what's the difference?

Mail clients I've seen differentiate between POP credentials and SMTP credentials (again we are assuming dealing with non-technical persons)

Anyone wanting to legitimately send mail via port 587 to smtp.mweb.co.za (like the thousands of people with @mweb addresses) gets a cryptic error when using a Vodacom connection while it works perfectly from everywhere else

That is a big problem.

Still not seeing the problem. If they can fill in a password for incoming mail, they can fill in a password for outgoing mail, or am I missing something?

Now, this is a big problem.

I suppose you have a point and pretty much any mail service nowadays should support SMTP auth.

WTF Lets mail him too :D
:)
An Authenticated smtp server by your mail provider would be the correct solution. Unfortunately most are not interrested. I tried at one point to get them all to provide an asmtp server, but only Telkom played game. so we had to put our own relay down.

Vodacom intercepting outbound mail on port 25

For all those users who are having trouble sending mail via their own mail servers using a Vodacom connection, please note that Vodacom are intercepting all mails on both the internet and unrestricted APNs and resending from their own server mid1.pfe.vodacom.co.za. Unfortunately this server is not always available and often too overloaded to accept connections. The result is a service that does not work, leading to major privacy concerns.

It has taken me a month to prove to Vodacom that this is indeed their issue, they have repeatedly denied doing this. Their staff are clearly unaware of the inner workings of their company, and are certainly not competent enough to handle unknown issues or know how to escalate them.

They claim that they are intercepting mails to prevent their clients sending spam. I am certain that conspiracy theorists might have a field-day with this.

I would be interested to know the legality, or lack thereof, of their doing this from a privacy point of view. I have not acknowledged, or even been presented with any notification of their intercepting my mails, and most of their staff (that I have had contact with) are unaware of this fact.

Interesting. Got some proof to put out there for us? Perhaps someone can help verify?

.
The problem is that Vodacom isn't blocking or redirecting port 25. They're SPOOFING the DNS.
