Hey all.

So Vodacom finally has eSIM support for supported phones. I went into the Vodashop at Sandton City and get it setup. Just make sure to get your activation code before you leave the store.

I’m using an iPhone 13 Pro on a vodacom contract if this is useful information for anyone

I don’t think that’s news. Vodacom and MTN support eSim on contract lines, and only Telkom offers prepaid eSims. We’re waiting for Vodacom and MTN to join the future.

Vodacom now offers prepaid esim I am using it on my Samsung phone. They launched 22 May already. MTN is rumoured to launch prepaid esim end of June somewhere

Vodacom does have prepaid eSIM support, though I had to go to a Cellucity store to get that done.

The only bummer is that Vodacom OneNumber (the service you would use to share your number across phone and smart watch) does not work on prepaid plans :(

so how do you get your watch to use esim. can you get a seperate number?

It's so stupid that you have to physically go into a store to get a prepaid esim. Why can't they just offer the service online like the rest of the world does? That's kind of the whole point of an esim.

EDIT: Agreed! It is so backwards; they could make the entire process online, but things are lucrative as is.

That is the strange thing; prepaid eSIM has been a thing in other parts of the world, including other African countries. I still dont understand why the OneNumber service is only available for contract customers :(

Normally you supposed to get one phone number and 2 eSIMs which are linked to that phone number. Such service is only available on contract with Vodacom and MTN. So sad.

Agreed! I am convinced both Vodacom and MTN really running with things like this since eSIM tech is still a new thing, and its easy revenue. I also question the monthly R25 fee contract customers are charged for the eSIM service.

Our cellphone networks are really behind the times when it comes to esims, wifi-calling, etc. It's pathetic really.

so i bought a prepaid esim from vodacom with the hopes i can use it on my watch. but now i need to rica the esim. Used the vodacom app, it just hangs when it gets to the ID part. Tried phoning for info, no luck.

I am lost. how am i supposed to rica the esim and why couldnt they just rica'd me when i was in store.

Did you manage to get it working on your watch , I'm assuming it's a Apple Watch , keep us posted

This is just a bunch of nonsense. With Vodacom eSims you will not receive SMS if physical sim is not in the phone...

This is just their rubbish OneNumber extended.

Well, when I spoke to the consultant she said it is a known issue.
Honestly, most of all the networks consultants us as consumers get to talk to know no more than pep store staff about their product, won't trust anything they say. The week before I got the esim printed with the QR code, the staff at one of the WC flagship stores told me they need to sim swop a physical sim, that is the only way it can work...

I’ll pop into a Vodacom store tomorrow - should I have time - and hear what those buffoons say…

No clarity on whether the prepaid esim works on an Apple Watch as that’s my main purpose.
