Vodacom eSIM now available!

Nope. Apple Watch does not scan the code.

I noticed that Vodacom charges R25 or so per month for using the mobile sim usage
Yeah, then it only works with the one number service which they don't offer on prepaid currently. Telkom and Cell C don't have wearable support and MTN also only on contract currently

What are the disadvantages of eSIM?
  • Does it take longer to upgrade your phone?
  • If you are overseas and lose your phone, is replacing the number in a new phone easier (or different in some way)?
  • Does it help with roaming? When I travel, I like to get a local SIM card but also have my SA number so I can be called from the office.

Hi guys

So i have trying to get my Samsung watch loaded with an esim. My phone Samsung A73 does not support esim, but i thought a new number loaded onto the watch should work. I am happy to have a seperate number for my watch at this point and for my use case(running).

I finally got my esim(new number) rica'd in store. you have to rica before you can use it.

It finally scanned the QR code on the watch app but when it "finalizes" it fails with an error saying
"Make sure you have the correct sim card in your phone and try again" or
"Couldn't setup mobile plan, make sure your phone is connected to a mobile network"

So it seems like there is still some dependency on my phone. I am lost at this point.

The vodacom guys also dont know how it works at this point tbh.

Lol, So went instore as advised by the Vodacom consultant to get a SIM swap done from physical to eSIM. Physical SIM deactivated and added the eSIM with no fuss...

Yet, I still cannot receive any SMS. Sending them works...

Could be the same as the Apple watch where it only allows a linked sim and not different number sim.

Just to make sure, when you scan QR with your phone for the watch does the phone have internet connectivity via Wifi or mobile data? Is your phone paired with bluetooth to the watch?

Two things, do you maybe have incoming calls barred on your number, I found you don't receive sms then as well. Next, ask them to check on your profile if receiving of sms is enabled.

None of these were the issue. The issue was having One Number activated. Once deactivated all went back to normal as One Number requires the physical SIM being in the paired device.

Problem is now I don’t have a cellular connection on my Apple Watch. I also cannot activate iMessage…

This is such a cluster ****…

Someone in this forum managed to have Telkom esim work independently on a Galaxy watch. But I don't remember which thread.

Welcome to 2019. Unfortunately, I'm scared to tell you what 2020 has installed for you.

eSIM has been available for years.
Read my post. I’m referring to eSim support on Vodacom for non wearable devices

Update: I decided to phone customer care one last time to check if the esim is indeed registered. They confirmed it registered on the 16th June.

SO yesterday out on a run i was like, let me try to phone my son, and to my surprise i got that message that says you dont have enough airtime to make a call.

Got home, loaded R2 airtime and boom i am able to make and receive calls from my watch.

So even though i still get the error above on the phone, it is working somehow.

The one option missing is VoLTE on both my Vodacom and MTN prepaid eSim's.

Telkom Mobile and Cell C has the VoLTE option

MTN have prepaid esim? I have vodacom esim and VoLTE enabled automatically after an hour or so of use

Yes. They currently in a trial phase. There's a very limited amount of stores offering it.

I have an LTE Samsung watch 3. My Samsung device does not cater for esim. Can i get an esim for the watch to use the same number as the device based on the above scenario?.

3) Vodacom issue : eSIM in a phone and eSIM in an AppleWatch: technically yes it it supposed to work without any problem as these 2 independent eSIM are just linked to the same phone number under the OneNumber feature.
BUT : Vodacom One Number feature has a limitation (it's a flaw or a bug or whatever you call it). it only allows one eSIM per phone number under the One Number feature and physical SIM cards.
So if you had an eSIM in your AppleWatch and now you order an eSIM for your phone, the eSIM in your AppleWatch will be automatically deactivated .. there's no way you can redownload an eSIM for your AppleWatch if you have done an eSIM swap for your phone.
So at the moment, until Vodacom solves this issue, you have to choose whether you want your eSIM in the phone or in the wearable. if you want to continue to use your eSIM in an Apple Watch DO NOT REQUEST A SWAP TO ESIM FOR YOUR PHONE and keep your physical SIM.

Something like this happened to me.

I did however have both eSIM on iPhone and Apple Watch activated simultaneously but I could not receive SMS’ on the phone. Once the One Number service was cancelled I could receive SMS’.

This is stupid problem to have and it means I’ve forked for a Cellular Apple Watch that cannot be connected to a cellular network.
