Vodacom eSIM now available!

It should work just fine, but they don't do the one number service for prepaid though. So your phone and watch numbers will differ

That’s fine. But do you get 2 separate sims or does the one sim “allocate” another number for the watch ?

Well with the onenumber service (contract only), you get physical and esim or esim and esim, but it's the same phone number where on prepaid esim you get allocated a phone number for each esim, so it will work if someone needs to reach you, but they will have to phone that number and not your usual number, so not really as intended then. That is, until they launch the onenumber service for prepaid. Hope that makes sense?

So added esim to iPhone but get this message on the watch

so i bought a prepaid esim from vodacom with the hopes i can use it on my watch. but now i need to rica the esim. Used the vodacom app, it just hangs when it gets to the ID part. Tried phoning for info, no luck.

I am lost. how am i supposed to rica the esim and why couldnt they just rica'd me when i was in store.

What were you hoping to use the eSIM for? Only your smatch watch or did you want to share one number across your smartphone and smart watch? Strange, I would have thought they would RICA your eSIM while you are in the store.

With the launch of prepaid eSIM, things are more confusing now. While we do have prepaid eSIM support, it seems like if you wish to use an eSIM on the smart watch and make use of a single number across the watch and smartphone, this still requires a contract (Vodacom OneNumber service). I could be wrong, but it seems like this is how things roll.

Hey all.

So Vodacom finally has eSIM support for supported phones. I went into the Vodashop at Sandton City and get it setup. Just make sure to get your activation code before you leave the store.

I’m using an iPhone 13 Pro on a vodacom contract if this is useful information for anyone

Welcome to 2019. Unfortunately, I'm scared to tell you what 2020 has installed for you.

eSIM has been available for years.

Same, this is what I also get on my phone and watch. It looks like Prepaid eSIM support and Vodacom's OneNumber service (what would be used to link the smart watch esim to phone) are different things. The latter still requires a contract: https://www.vodacom.co.za/vodacom/shopping/v/vodacom-one-number
That is how I understand it as well, though what would stop it to work if you get two seperate number esims from Vodacom and use one for iphone and one for watch, unless Apple specifically only allow a linked esim on the watch?

You can only link one eSIM to the Apple watch.

There you go @tRoN it should work unless there is some magic happening in the background we are unaware of

Doesn’t make sense to me.

Do I need to add a second esim which will magically get installed on the watch ?

I just need a sim for my watch. I don’t need to take calls on my phone with the esim

On the other point my main physical sim is Telkom mobile.

So added a second Vodacom esim. Same error message on watch

Also note you can’t have 2 eSim’s active at the same time

Does the apple watch app give the option to scan qr code? If not then it looks like it can only link your main sim, which neither Telkom or Vodacom prepaid supports

Nope. Apple Watch does not scan the code.

I noticed that Vodacom charges R25 or so per month for using the mobile sim usage
