Vodacom gets Nokia Lumia 900 - pricing inside

I am sure alot of users *were* looking forward to getting this phone but after just glancing at the table looking to see what data was given, i am apalled at the amount of spaces not showing any data at all.

Had to laugh at those outrageous contract prices.

A phone that's already dead in the water with such premium pricing?

DOA - Thanks to MS Fragmentation

Older Windows Phone devices, such as the Lumia 900, will not receive an official upgrade to Windows Phone 8. Instead Microsoft will release Windows Phone 7.8, a new version of Windows Phone 7, for existing users.

Q. How can this be an "Older" Phone if it's just being released?
Windoze 8 for PC's has been RTM, and Surface and Phone not far behind.
Windoze Phone 8 fragments the ecosystem.
I doubt there will be an "unofficial" upgrade.

Dead in the water? What an absurd thing to say. You can speak for yourself, but for 99% of people upgradeability to WP8 is a non-issue.
 
I just rather buy the phone cash

Actually, Windows Phone 8 STOPS fragmentation. I would explain why, but if you can't spell Windows right, I'm guessing you don't care what I have to say.
 
This is just bizarre naming and pricing
Business Call R379, 0 minutes, 0 sms, 0 data
Business Call s R389, 0 minutes, 0 sms, 0 data

Everyday off-peak R379, 120 off-peak, 0 sms, 0 data

Both business call options get a worse deal than the everyday one, which is presumably targeted at non-business users?
And none of the non-promotion deals has any data?

Let's see how happy 99% of Lumia 900 owners will be in two months time when Microsoft announces a slew of new features for Windows Phone 8.

I imagine them hurrying home to do the OTA via wifi, just to find a message that says "No Update Available".

And they have just committed to a new two year contract..... let's see then. ;)

Vodacom took some punishment (on the MyBB forums) when they started bundling data with their normal voice contracts. One example I saw given was someone who wanted a cheap voice contract for a family member that would never use the data, and then the new smartphone would go to someone else who would make better use of it.

It seems then that they've removed the data from their normal contracts and are using their Smart Plans as a way to bundle data with smartphones.

That said, looking at just the July Business Call contract prices I gathered for last month's pricing comparisons, Vodacom now charge a higher monthly price on their normal contracts for devices such as the SGS3 but now don't include the 250MB data. So those folks who complained aren't getting the lower the price they wanted.

There is indeed a difference between fragmentation and old hardware not getting the upgrade to Windows Phone 8, but as I understand it there isn't automatic backwards compatibility for Windows Phone 8 apps to Windows Phone 7. Apps developed for Windows Phone 7.5 will work on Windows 8, but not the other way around, right?

Perhaps this is something we should discuss in the WP forum (or in IM :P), because I'm actually quite interested in what you have to say :)

I've stopped trying to understand contract pricing models.

@Jan, yes, that is correct. WP7.5 apps will work on WP7.5/7.8 and WP8, but WP8 apps will not work on WP7.5/7.8.
It makes sense too, as most of the new functionality on WP8 just purely doesn't exist on WP7.

Perhaps you are right to say upgradability to WP8 doesn't matter. But to 99%? I think you are under estimating people's knowledge and expectations.

The fact that it doesn't get upgraded alone makes it of a much lower value than other premium phones on other OS'es. This is a major upgrade. Think of it as the difference between buying a Vista and a Win7 PC a few weeks before Win7 was released.

So, yes. With that pricing, it is dead in the water.

If they were selling it for R279 on a topup contract I would understand. But at premiums over R350/mth on Weekender or something - are you kidding me?
 
This prices looks like the more you pay the less value you get,I have difficulty comprehending the logic behind vodacom business contracts
