Vodacom Network Problems

I think today you'd just better rule out 3G and GPRS till a couple of hours have passed, there are still many network problems. I can't even send a single byte of data. Yay.

The only thing I can do is do my work and watch the forums like a hawk.

I can do my job and watch the forum with no performance impact at all :D

I am not here to moan about Vodacom on this site but I would like to state my opinion. So here goes, like with any new service that comes out there are bound to be some problems. This does not excuse the fact that you are paying for service when there is none or hardly any currently. We have to remember that Vodacom is the pioneer when it comes to 3G in South Africa and I am sure it is a learning experience not only for Vodacom but for us forumites as well. We should start working together to make sure that all problems are resolved efficiently, the root of the problem fixed not just the symptoms. I do believe that all forumites contribute in a great way to ensure that this happens. V3G has been a great help to many with regards to their other problems in previous posts and I am sure... no I know that he is doing everything he possibly can to sort this one out. All I can say is great service from V3G. So thats my 2c cents worth.. wait 2c not in production so thats my 5c worth....

As usual, you guys are all correct in your opinions.

It is a new service and with new technology (Vodacom pretty much rolled out 3G with the rest of the world) there are bound to be problems as the network grow. It's obvious that the current problems are caused by loading of some elements. Even with capacity planning this would not have been foreseen as there is no baseline.

Having said that, it is a paid service and you guys are entitled to get the service you expect and paid for and I WILL pick up this point with the commercial people....

At least the forum is one of the few things not blocked by the clients firewall where I am. I can't even log into the Vodacom site from here. Having such limited access can be frustrating for a coder.

This is a bad advertisment over here. I am the only guy here with 3G. The Denel guys are bugging me senseless to have a look at my card. But guess what? When it does not work they immediately start talking about products like iBurst. Today's 3G breakthrough have impressed a few guys but everybody is worried about reliability. Quite a few of them feel sorry for me for being stuck in a contract till Feb 2007. In the lab, where I am working, there are 5 laptops and 1 desktop. Many of these laptops travel a lot and can easily be candidates for 3G.

So when I am being screwed Vodacom is infact screwing themselves.

Just tell them that you'll have to hold your opinion for the time being as Vodacom are experiencing serious problems at the moment. Iburst and Sentech just don't have the coverage the cellular network does. GPRS and 3G as a concept is absolutely great.

Just because we are having a few problems at the moment, 'us Vodacom users' will just have to bite our tongues and see.

The people who do pre-pay for bandwidth do have a serious point here. Especially since there's no bandwidth roll-over. You can't just say 'Oh well, you paid extra this month because we had problems. Better luck next time.'

Somebody has to step down and do something about this, it's unacceptable. Even the amount of bandwidth I've spent over and over just trying to accomplish a single simple task and having to re-do it because packets dropped, connections timed out. Blah.

I pay for this? You pay for this? We all pay for this, together!

[An exception to this, Vodacom doesn't really have to pay for their mistakes. Funny hey?]

For a minute there I thought I was in the iBurst forum ... sounds very familiar, but with one difference: Vodacom at least acknowledges that there is a problem, and they are trying to fix it. WBS doesn't even bother to acknowledge they've heard of iBurst

IMO this is one of the reasons for the calm attitude of forumites in this the Vodacom forum - you might be losing hair or going prematurely grey during this problem, but forumites in the iBurst forum ripped all their hair out a long time ago...:D

This is very true. I feel that we have been heard and they are working on the problem. My only hope is that they can fix the problem, and the problem isn't something like saturation.

Well, after reading all of these problems, I dialled up with my 6680, via 3G, and got decent 250kb/s + speeds ... oh, I am in the Boksburg area

I was inspired to try my 3G again, and I just signed on... downloaded some stuff... wait a minute... yes, I actually downloaded! Wow, the speed is good. So my 3G is back up again. Please, stay like this!

Well said TigerTael, I do beleive that once Vodacom gets it right everyone will want to be on their 3G network. I for one am willing to stick it out coz once these problems have been resolved Vodacom's 3G netwok will show its teeth

im confused where do you see the 250 kb/s? is it on the little download screen eg: 12.3 meg of 250 meg at 250 kb/s?
cause if it is ... im getting butt raped ... my fastest ive ever seen was at 50 kb/s

They're talking in Kilobits, not kilobytes. So 250kilobits/sec basically equates to 31.25Kilobytes/sec. At least, they had better be talking in kilobits, otherwise all their credibility just went out the window :P

You can measure the speed in various ways really, PC, Phone, etc etc.

Erm, kb/s = kilobits/s, so my credibility should hopefully be just inside the window still :D
Calculations done using a calculator and Telkom speedtest

Yeah, I thought you were. Just had to put my little disclaimer in thar :P

Just to think, when connectivity returns, the 3G network is going to be seriously clogged up with people trying to use up their allocated data before the month ends....
