Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

Hi Guys,

I have a connection problem ;-)

I can connect fine for a while but as soon as the modem changes modes eg 3G to HSDPA, the problems start.

All tests were done APN=auto (INTERNET)

I posted this reply via my company vpn - APN = INTERNETVPN (No troughput problems, dns problems etc.)

These are the tests I have done and it seems that the Vodacom dns server ip addresses are not distributed correctly - last part shows ips do not ping but SAIX dns server is up.

Can the dns servers be specified somewhere in the Vodafone Connect software or is this a Vodacom issue? I found working dns server ips elsewhere on this forum but WinXP does not keep the dns servers I specify.

Thanks for a very informative forum,

Regards,
Craig.

Just a quick update, I noticed that the connection improved on friday. I went from 600kb down to about 1000kb down. The problem in the stability of the connection was still there (ie fluctuations). Saturday showed the same results with the connection improving after 11pm.

sunday is a different story and it seems to be back to the issues i had earlier this week. Here are my speed tests to various areas:

- To JHB

- To CPT

- To Paris

- To London

- To Washington USA

As u can see the last 2 tests show the reliability issue and im still not even getting close to the 3.6 service. Also Vodacom hasnt got back to me with the issue, V3G are u able to tell us the problem?

Yeah the last few days have been baaaaaaad

made me buy an extra R55 airtime for 3.6 HSDPA.....

but, then again...maybe that's what they want - slow the 1.8 network so more ppl pay R50.

Connectivity problem near N1 City, Cape Town. I'm on pre-paid, have tried 'internet' and 'internetvpn' APNs to no avail. Can connect, but can't resolve names using Vodacom's DNS or OpenDNS A routing problem?

USSD reports I have 1056.15MB available on my data bundle.

Using MTN to post this.

UPDATE: Been working fine since about 00:30.

Can u give any info as to what the problem is? These swings in connection reliability is insane

The guys have confirmed that you're a definite 'victim' of transmission issue, or rather; lack of transmission. In their own words:

The site is currently experiencing IuB congestion which is the cause for the poor throughput. The site is ear-marked for an IuB upgrade, however this will be done when we received the additional links from Telkom.

I did ask if Telkom gave any ETA on the requested upgrades and after they could start talking again, (trying to suppress incessant, manic laughing), they said they'll try and get a date.

By transmission u mean my connection to a tower?

Separate of that, why is a friend of mine experiencing the same anomaly in a different area and when 11pm strikes things are back to normal?

No, the lines connecting the towers to the Vodacom network. We've got close to 10 000 lines outstanding, so many people are affected by this.

I guess as the traditional 'call-more' period dies down, after 11pm, more bandwidth becomes available for data-only.

I have 3 towers that i can point to, I know the 1 tower is lacking in speed. But surely the other 2 cant be having the same issue?

But if it is congestion related due to the "call-more" period then a lot of towers will be affected.

Fair enough, but the swings in service are not right. Have crap for months then suddenly things are sorted, 2months later back to the same issue as before. Isnt there some sort of preemptively measure that can be taken to avoid this congestion?

As V3g has already explained a lot depends on how fast Telkom supplies more lines.

International throughput has been terrible of late, tonight it is just way too slow to try and do anything without me wanting to smash something. A vodacom speed test shows full HSDPA speed but that's local only and "only" within Vodacom's network, accessing many other local sites are NOT at HSDPA speeds as the speed test reveals. This has been going on for months now.

Will escalate but I need:

Your area:
Speed test: Throughput and latency:
(Maybe use speedtest.net to NY for everyone)
Your APN:

V3G, Have emailed you regarding this.

This is really starting to get ridiculous! I'm getting Download speeds of under 10KB/s in the evenings. And its been going on for a while now, i left it be becoz i thought it might sort itself out. It hasnt.

Every time i have to wait till the early morning before the shop opens to download anything.

I'll PM you those details V3G, tomorrow morning.

EDIT: I just did a speedtest for interest sake, and this is what i get:

Download Speed: 245 kbps (30.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 324 kbps (40.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Like V3G says we all affected, with telkom being the suspect again and so is the circle of life. Either way vodacom gets their debit order at the end of this month and we feel violated.

Hi

Got a question for anyone that can answer, well two actually.

When I connect using the Vodafone Mobile Connect, it says connect to "Vodacom HSDPA "and after a few seconds, it changes to "Vodacom 3G" then it goes back to HSDPA and so forth. When I play games online, I notice alot of lag when this happens.

So my question, why is this happening, does it really change between 3G and HSDPA connections and how can I stop it from doing so that it only uses HSDPA?

And my other question is, sometimes it says "Vodacom HSUPA" instead of HSDPA. So does that mean HSUPA is running or being tested at the moment?

Thanks in advance for your replys.
