Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

mmmm... got 3g but it's a donkey tonight...

Download Speed: 859 kbps (107.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 332 kbps (41.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

eish, been relatively consistent over the last 6 months but now a degraded service, well, since the weekend in any event... To be honest although provisioned for 3.6mb I haven't noticed a significant difference in performance, certainly not twice as quick/good as 1.8mb...

Latency issues

Was wondering if any1 else has started having latency issues with online gaming starting round Saturday.

Im experiencing major spikes and at least triple the latency from what iv had the last 3 months (was 500ms and now its 1500-2000ms).

I did the vodacom test and it seems to be stuggling, got 3 different results:

1. 1900kb-down and 56kb-up
2. 600kb down and 350kb up
3. 752kb down and 150kb up

2 other guys online using 3g are experiencing the same issues, so any1 else having hassles?

Can connect but DNS lookups fail

Last night I once again had issues with the DNS servers not being able to resolve anything. I can connect, receive an IP, but can't access anything. nslookup reveals that nothing can be resolved.

I was connected happily for while when things just suddenly stopped. nslookup failed. I disconnected and reconnected a number of times and then finally switched over to unrestricted APN, which did the same. I then left it for a short while and then things suddenly came right (server reboot perhaps ).

@v3g: I have included the time frame and some of IPs I had if you can get someone to look at this.

3G Died for me too last night. Just after 8. I just gave up after 30mins of waiting, refeshing, restarting and just went to bed.

Thanks! This is a great post in the sense I can cut-and-paste this directly to engineering and they can work on the problem. :)

It's not so great that the GNS failed....

Pleasure :)

ooooh one fat typo: Date should be 24/04/2008 not 23/04/2008

Looking at this again, it looks like the Western Cape were cut over from 10.x.x.x to 41.x.x.x. and this probably resulted in routes that had to be updated.

Nope. That was my IP when I tried the unrestricted APN, which had the same problem. I then just left it connected to unrestricted APN and the problem eventually went away.

Same here. On the phone it's worst. Sometimes MXit connects and the web browser gives Packet Data errors and doesn't connect (N82), and when the web browser does connect, after few minutes the connection goes interrupted, like when you get a phone call, and it results in a timeout, and then you have to start all over again trying to connect, and then you'll get the timeout, and then connect again, and get a timeout, I could go on forever

Connectivity problems - Gauteng

Have been experiencing frequent disconnects today, I have called the data helpdesk and they (Sam) have confirmed connectivity problems in the Gauteng area, engineers are working on the problem.

DL - 458 kbps
UL - 335 kbps

Same here. I've battling since getting my 1st VC data bundle in months. My memory's been fading and somehow I forgot why I've switched to MTN for the past year or so. This is utterly frustrating. One can't surf continuously or even get a download to complete before another f*ckin' disconnection.

It is seriously beginning to pi$$ me off. Pity I bought a 2GB bundle. Now I'm f*cked for the month. Well at least there is a solution for me at the end of May.

No VC for at least 5 years this time. They need to sort out their sh*t first.

Well I've had 14 disconnections for the past hour. Come on VC, I'm sure you can improve on this. How 'bout only 13 per hour for the rest of the night?

Another day in the life of a South African:

1) Load shedding = +1
2) Water shedding = +1
3) 3G shedding = > +100

What a lovely country!
