Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

I know shadowfox's been chatting to Eric and the guys, so he's probably referring to other stuff outside the tower swopout. Probably something more central.

Glad to see you're stable now (or at least, your connection is). After all your b!tching and moaning, the guys built 3 new towers around your house....:D

I haven't had any problems at home in the last couple of days - so I can agree with morkhans - so those three towers around his house must be helping me as well :p

You guys are welcome to come put one up in my backyard as well :D

I prefer to call it constructive input, watch I don't send VC the bill :p

Thanks for the extra towers :D

Can I have some towers too please - pretty please? Not stable at all. Works fine during the day but from about 8pm is a nightmare - dropping, going down to GPRS and no through traffic....it's been ongoing now for nearly 3 weeks.

Funny part is 3 computers in same house - one old (flat) modem has problems most often, my newer, slimmer one gives daily problems, and my hubby's laptop with internal modem gives virtually no problems.....sorry I am not all technically minded so don't have all the model etc details at work and usually cannot post at night due to slowness.

What you're seeing is called cell-breathing and is the effect of signal levels that drop as the network gets busier. You're mostly likely seeing it first as your laptop has the least efficient antenna so it 'falls' of the network first.

Unfortunately Gordons Bay is one of those areas where residents oppose any attempt to put up extra towers.

Your best bet is an external antenna but your laptop most likely don't have a plug for it.

But if you have 3 computers all on 3G you should rather get a 3G / WiFi router (like the LinkSys) and put a single SIM in it with a larger (and less expensive /MB) bundle on it. Then let all 3 PC's connect and use this single SIM.

Pretty sure this will save you money.

To ensure the best signal, you mount an external high-gain antenna outside and connect it to the router.

Now you have the best possible signal at the best possible price/MB.

Problems with Vodacom HSDPA connection in Mouille Point/Sea Point

I have been experiencing frequent disconnects, degraded service, etc since Thursday 27 March 2009.

Anyone else having problems connecting to the Vodacom tower?

I'm glad to see Voda's connection in Ballito observed Earth Hour :P

Having trouble with 3G/HSDPA at N1 City; I can connect, but can't ping or resolve DNS.

If I set modem to GPRS/EDGE only I can connect and everything is fine but unfortunately this tower has never been upgraded from GPRS, so it's painfully slow.

Working perfectly now. :)

@v3g: Are the GPRS towers ever going to get upgraded to EDGE?

Do the full report "as per template in my sig thing" won't you.

Have you always been in Cape Town?

Ok, will give that a bash!

No, I sold my house in Irene, Centurion, last year and moved back to Cape Town.

We still had a glass of red grape juice at the last MyADSL conference at Vodaworld. ;)

Yes, that's why I was surprised to see you're suddenly in Cape Town.

Best move you could've made! In Cape town we don't drink "grape juice", we drink the proper stuff!

Make sure you join the next Cpt BB bash. Morkhans, Linoman or ShakeBake will probably organise one soon. Last one was so long time ago I can't even remember, must be three weeks or more ago. :(

Should be a blast! Will join the next one.

Thank you, someone from Vodacom Data Services did phone me. Appreciate it a lot.

I'm still having frequent disconnects, and, like I said, it only started from last Thursday. Before that, I had 8 glorious months of superfast Vodacom HSDPA internet.

The way I feel now, I'm gonna go throw this Vodafone 172 in the sea and stop the pain.

I am managing a site from home and it's becoming impossible to do my work. :(

I'm experiencing very slow speeds(695/1001) and extreme latency in Panorama area. Speeds were OK a week or 2 ago and nothing changed on my side. I know there were issues with the tower in my area a while ago.

I thought that was resolved?
V3G, is there still issues in my area?

Well, you kinda answered your own question. :)

PM me the details as per my sig and I'll pass it on.

I blame any problems in the Northern subs on Morks and ginggs, BTW. :D

I was hoping no-one had discovered our secret 3G bonding device which allows us to DoS a tower. We are however finding that funding is a bit of a problem. Any chance of some better pricing on bundles so we can continue the good work? :D

I'm getting constant disconnects - I stay online for maybe 5 or 6 minutes tops.

I did have a chat with Sean last week, and he said it should have cleared up by Monday - but it hasn't really, although today is particularly bad ... at least yesterday and Monday I went for a couple of hours before randomly disconnecting.
