Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

No, just connect with MDMA and once you're connected you'll see number like 1408 for uplink and a number for downlink. Top to Middle right. What are these?

Maybe post a screenshot. But you must be connected.

MDMA Shows:

Uplink - 1408.000
Downlink - 3584.000

Heres the link to the screenshot:

Just did another speed test as well(twice), both times it didnt finish as it got stuck at the upload. The 2 download speeds were respectively around 700Kbps for the first one, and 1.7Mbps for the second one.

I've never seen anything remotely close to 2.5Mbps(or higher).

This is in Observatory, Cape Town. I have motivated that we cancel our contracts with Vodacom, so they've lost just under 100 contracts due to their poor service.

...

It's likely a tower dropped off the grid, but Vodacom's pretending nothing's wrong at all. Anyone know the real reason?

I'd say that 100 extra HSDPA users on any one tower would pretty much kill it...

Just a quick question... if I am getting downlink speeds of ± 1.4mbps with an E620 card, would I realistically get better speeds by upgrading to a card that supports 3.6 or 7.2?

E620 doesnt support that much Uplink? Aren't the Data Cards limited to 384/64?

Here's a bit of a funny thing .. I ran a couple of speedtests here from my office in Woodstock .... (when I can stay connected long enough to actually do one, that is.)

To the Cape Town server:

D/L: 0.52Mb/s
U/L: 0.34Mb/s
ping: 952 ms
(This was one of the better results)

To an international server (New York)

D/L: 0.92 Mb/s
U/L: 0.22 Mb/s
ping: 419ms

Not only does the speed suck ... but international is faster than local? 0.o

Probably not. The cards will never run at 100% but should achieve close to it. So if you got consistently higher that 1600 - 1700, I'd try a higher speed card.

This is on speedtest.net right?

I don't know who hosts the Cape Town server, but their results are always extremely bad. So you're not testing your data link, rather their connection or server.

Basically don't use the Cape Town server on speedtest.net. It's a joke.

Also, always understand that when you run a speed test you're testing an end-to-end system, not just a link. Anything down the path could be the bottle neck. Including the testing server. Like the Cpt one.

If you want to test local, the JHB server seems better. But for local, rather use speed.vodacom.co.za.

Why do people try to resort to blackmail tactics when all you have to do is just ask nicely?:D

I often wonder the same. Not only do you not get any results, but you kinda do yourself in.

People (as human beings) will nearly always result positively to a well worded request but nearly always negatively to a threat.

Request for V3G!

Hi All & Vodacom3g!

For once I did not complain but waited. - huh, were actually to busy!

The last month we all suddenly experienced slow throughput and bad ping times, no data through put etc.......

vodacom3g: Please tell the techs in Nelspruit I am very grateful they fixed the problem!
Yesterday afternoon they most prob. pulled the faulty equipment as my3G/HSDPA signal went AWOL till about 22:00.

Voila - nice difference!
More stable data through put and reasonable ping times!
Not as stable as a month ago but very good.

Tell them to contact me for a coffee/drink......

Thanks,

Neville

Vodacom having issues in Mpumalanga area ?

For a couple months now I had near perfect connection on 3G/HSDPA (Pre-paid on e220 modem)

Then problems started two Sundays ago with the connection been down the entire day.

They got it up and running again and it was fine for a few days then around Monday this week more problems. Fixed those by simply waiting for things to come right, which they finally did.

Been a few more days and now tonight just when I am trying to upload my clients near finalized website I am getting disconnected every (literally) 5 minutes and having to redial the connection.

Is this a problem country wide or is it localised (Mpumalanga, Belfast specifically).

Please dont tell me to phone 155 for support. Last time I did that the support lady nearly broke everything on the PC and I had to use my restore from last known working config to get it right again.

Any light shed on this matter would be appreciated.

An sms I received from Voda:

"GREAT NEWS! From 1 April HSDPA 3.6 with HSUPA is absolutely FREE! No need to subscribe. Watch the press for more exciting Broadband offerings coming soon! VODACOM"

Ok.... I have the modem, I connect at HSDPA, so how do I get to connect at HSUPA?

Tested my speed tonight; no luck :)

Download Speed: 1013 kbps (126.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 826 kbps (103.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Anyone else experiencing slow upload speeds?

Download Speed: 1352 kbps (169 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 15 kbps (1.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Lately on my side it's getting slower all the time. Sometimes I get connected at nice speed and then bang it's gone within a few minutes.

This morning -

Download Speed: 832 kbps
Upload Speed: 112 kbps

Hopefully I'll also see the 3.6 service speeds sometime ;)

Just did another speed test, upload slightly better, download worse :(

Download Speed: 805 kbps (100.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 73 kbps (9.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

I only get through-put for about 2 minutes, then nothing. Dialing 155 says there are issues :(

Vodacom is slowly losing it.

I have the same problem with good 3G reception, and data download and just as I am working, uploading or downloading the signal strength goes to 0 for about 10 minutes or so. Then it comes back. I have 3G only setup otherwise this makes it stuck on GPRS.

This happened last year once every 5-8 weeks usually on Sunday evenings for a couple of hours. I now can't use my 3G card AT ALL on Sundays. During the week around 8pm some days I can't use it either. It is getting worst.

Now for the more technical questions.

Obviously Vodacom would de-allocate spreading codes after a short time that I stop communicating. If I send data again it would be like RACH again. In my case I have forced constant traffic (not ICMP!) between myself and our company server to keep the link up - but this does not help.

Obviously you are running out of spreading codes. This now makes me ask the important question:
1. Do you drop active customers in order to allow new users onto the network?
2. Do you give preference to voice calls ...which obviously explain the sunday thing.

Is it just me or are the mobile phone manufacturers just so incredibly stupid that they dont allow a mode where the phone is active on GSM until you want to make a Video call (very seldom) or a data connection and switch over to 3G then. Yes I know it would be a bit slower, but I said a mode. So if they user dont like it - they dont set it. Well first of all this would increase battery considerably, result in better voice calls and clear up some congestion on 3G data. There's an add-on for WM phones to do this, but I would suspect a company like Vodaphone should be asking for this.

I am seriously considering alternatives, because it is not getting better. This happens all over Cape Town

Is there anyone with some honest answers? If we know what's going on, we can try our best to work around it - like using my MTN connection on Sundays.
