Vodacom is slowly losing it.
I have the same problem with good 3G reception, and data download and just as I am working, uploading or downloading the signal strength goes to 0 for about 10 minutes or so. Then it comes back. I have 3G only setup otherwise this makes it stuck on GPRS.
This happened last year once every 5-8 weeks usually on Sunday evenings for a couple of hours. I now can't use my 3G card AT ALL on Sundays. During the week around 8pm some days I can't use it either. It is getting worst.
Now for the more technical questions.
Obviously Vodacom would de-allocate spreading codes after a short time that I stop communicating. If I send data again it would be like RACH again. In my case I have forced constant traffic (not ICMP!) between myself and our company server to keep the link up - but this does not help.
Obviously you are running out of spreading codes. This now makes me ask the important question:
1. Do you drop active customers in order to allow new users onto the network?
2. Do you give preference to voice calls ...which obviously explain the sunday thing.
Is it just me or are the mobile phone manufacturers just so incredibly stupid that they dont allow a mode where the phone is active on GSM until you want to make a Video call (very seldom) or a data connection and switch over to 3G then. Yes I know it would be a bit slower, but I said a mode. So if they user dont like it - they dont set it. Well first of all this would increase battery considerably, result in better voice calls and clear up some congestion on 3G data. There's an add-on for WM phones to do this, but I would suspect a company like Vodaphone should be asking for this.
I am seriously considering alternatives, because it is not getting better. This happens all over Cape Town
Is there anyone with some honest answers? If we know what's going on, we can try our best to work around it - like using my MTN connection on Sundays.
1) No
2) Yes
Many of the incredibly stupid handset manufacturers do provide a '2G-preferred' mode.
I tend to keep my mobile on 2G and switch to 3G when needed, but purely to conserve battery life.
Pass me the 155 reference numbers and I'll trace what happened to your complaints.
