This pre-paid? As posted above, we did have problems. Are you now OK?

Go and have a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster on us!

It is OK for now. Although I had a disconnect or two, and traffic that stops to flow. I am on prepaid.

I hope things are going to stabilize otherwise I will have quite a few Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters. (even that I know that should only have one).

;)

I spoke to fast !!!! My Vodacom connection died again !!!!:mad::mad:

I posted this message using my Virgin Mobile SIM in my data card.
It is slower but at least stable compared to VC (ATM).

Will now start to drink out of frustration !!!!!

My guess ... demand > capacity ... due to favorable price point ... and the other networks lagging behind.

Pretty much, also with the new numbers we see each week, we keep on hitting thresholds the vendors did not know existed in their kit. Sometimes it feels like we've not even removed all the bubble-wrap and we're already replacing the kit.

Guess we have the warped local broadband environment to thank for these massive growths of 3G.....

Rats, will see what's going on.

I believe you're the only one who can handle two....

Crappy!!!!!!

Ok I am now in Pretoria and getting the following using the internetVPN apn:

Ping Vodacom SMTP – no packet loss.
Vodacom Speed test – 1501 kbps/271 kbps
Sentech speed test – 169.29 kbps
Speak Easy speed test – 469 kbps/197 kbps
Gamco Speed test - 217 kbps
Ping www.saix.net 85% packet loss.
Ping www.google.com 83% packet loss.

So in Pretoria I have some better results, but still not acceptable.

Regards

Nico

Your profile is for HSDPA. (1800/384)

To confirm 1000%, when you run the speed test, the LED on your E220 is turquoise (HSDPA) and not blue (3G), but you get the 3G (384/64) speeds?

If so, we need to ask Brad to give your tower a kick or two.

Yes LED is cyan (official colour in Huawei manual) when I do my tests. Latest test a few minutes ago:
Download Speed: 269 kbps (33.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 57 kbps (7.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

@v3g & sky.akash, my memory has just sparked, I had this same problem a while back [May 2007], and I'm not exactly sure what solved the problem, but it did appear to go away after I applied the following firmware update to my E220: "E220Update_11.110.05.00.00(3.6M%20Vista).zip", although it is possible that it was something base-station related and that that was coincidentally resolved at about the same time as I applied the firmware update...

My firmware is: 11.109.03.00.67 and I am using XP. I thought that when you update the dashboard software it includes a firmware update:confused:

My E220's current firmware version is 11.110.05.00.00, I'm not exactly sure about the firmware update procedure, but I think you need to tick the "force update" checkbox to get the firmware to update as well as to have the new .iso image placed on the USB flash drive part of the E220.

Basically I think you should try the HMP installation again, but this time ensure that the "foce update" checkbox is checked...

I have already downloaded the firmware update off the Vodacom website and installed. It certainly improved the upload speed into HSDPA territory:) Can't say the same for download speed though:(
Download Speed: 269 kbps (33.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 253 kbps (31.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

My guess is that you might only be able to get an answer to that if you're fluent in Chinese and have a contact inside Huawei: it's not like these firmware & HMC & HMP releases are documented with a changelog that we mortals have access to :(.

If there are any Chinese forumites, it would be great if you could perhaps drop Huawei an email asking them for some changelog info...

True. I did try searching the Huawei website for the firmware update and came up with a page with Chinese text and from the shortness of the page and considering my entered text still appeared in English, I'm guessing it came up with a "could-not-be-found" message:(

Been having issues with stability in Centurion. It is either general problem or localised to Wierda South.

It gripes me as I am in Cape Town and the disconnects means that my push mail is not working.

Ah finally :D

The graph on the Huawei dashboard shows the top speed as 165 KB/s (1320kbps)

Let's pin this down.

Won't you post your before and after firmware revisions? I'll pass it to Huawei and our testing centers.

We've now got two confirmed cases (ic & akash) and they both also had the 3G-speed problem.

akash, I assume you did not move, i.e. still in the same location?

@ic & V3g, thanks for your help. I did get my E220 on an MTN top up 75 contract so that explains the old firmware version. My new version is exactly the same as ic's.

I wish I had a business that did this well :)

BTW it seems the 3G/HSDPA problems experienced in Centurion/Hennopspark area have been resolved by the work done last night. No more "server disconnects" today.

Keep on losing 3G connectivity for 30 seconds or so and getting disconnected, then it magically reappears. Actually lose the signal totally but it comes back pretty quickly so I don't think its cell breathing? Been an ongoing problem but its been much worse today. :(

Are you using a prepaid sim?
