OK, have reported it.
Many thanks! V3g has since determined that although I have a 1GB bundle loaded, when I connect my bundle is not being used, instead my airtime is being depleted at out-of-bundle rates and now I have none, this is the cause of my 619 error.

I have just spoken to 155. They have confirmed that only the PREPAID users are affected.:mad:

Could they not send an sms ??? indicating such.

I tried with Prepaid and Contract and none were working in wierdapark. Now is the first time I can get on the net with Prepaid.

@Csnoopy, how did you come to the dial up cost of 59,4c per minute? My reference to the pain threshold - due to the downtime some people may have started to pull their hair out;) I know that the downtime is really irritating but how do you expect them to carry out network upgrades without any downtime? When this process is complete everyone will be all smiles and our part timers on here will just disappear without so much as a thank you to V3g and the behind the scenes techies who had to work over this long weekend to bring better service to VCs 20 million+ subscribers.

In the end it's us the users that pay for the techies's overtime and that on a long weekend nogal. They are starting to work like Telkom, only on weekends-wonder what they do in normal weekdays!
I realy hope this was the last straw of this downtime

Do you think contract users are getting preferential treatment:confused: Why should it be like this. We all live in a democracy nowso why are they discreminating against us:mad::mad:

common Vc get your act together. Even Virgin was up all weekend, although GPRS bu at least realiable:D

And through all of this V3G is very quit and lurking in the background:sick:

1) Very easy. Did you read my post carefully. Standard Telkom calls are charged @ 59.4c/m. And I am using a 56k analogue modem on a Telkom fixed line. :p Clearer ??
2)If they are going to do upgrades, then why not inform there so very loyal users. Then we can also plan our time accordingly. I don't think that is asking to much, do you?

V3G , very stable connection (HSDPA) tonight :)

Thanks - hope you had a nice day off :D

Not really a day off, ginngs came around and we ended up chatting and solving the world's problems most of the day. But we were busy with this problem throughout the day.

To put what happened here into perspective. A number of pre-paid users did not get authenticated onto the network or, if connected, were not allowed to transfer data.

So the network, per se, was up and all contract and most pre-paid users could connect and work.

Pre-paid users use a different authentication system than contract, so this problem would only have affected pre-paid and only a sub-set as there are a fair number of these systems (14, I think).

All sorted now, thanks v3g! :D

I believe (need to confirm 100%), that everyone trying to connect (the above problem) created a queue and your bundle activation also ended up in this same queue. In your case although the bundle was bought and reflected on the purchase system, the same 'authentication system' did not know about it yet (due to the queue) and therefore did not use it.

We'll build a check for this into the monitoring systems.

So we're back to the question if you need R1 and/or an active bundle?

Maybe you can destroy the rest of the R balance and take it below R1 and see what happens? Call a long lost friend overseas, should work well. :)

OK, this makes sense. Exactly what happened my end. Thanks for letting us know!

Your feedback helped trace the problem, tx!

Always a great help to get as much detail as possible. A lot of the posts said GPRS/3G is down (implying a radio/transmission problem), which is a big difference from I can connect but can't transfer data, which rather points to something at the application layer.

The "GPRS/3G down" statements actually cost a lot of time as I sent the guys on a wild-goose chase trying to find towers down.

Especially the one where the person had no money in his account and could not connect but reported it as 'Vodacom down' for 2 days..... (not you ginggs!!)

I like these excuses, I want to believe them, but I just can't. We've had too many already.

I wonder how qualified the Vodacom technical personnel really are?

You are definitely mistaken in your assumptions:p According to the Telkom price list 59.4c is the minimum charge per local call and not the cost per minute. Also is clearly states:
Conventional calls (the minimun charge will not apply to on-net dial-up internet calls to ISP's)

The cost per second (standard time incl VAT) is 0.634c which is 38.04c per minute.
The cost per second (callmore time incl VAT) is 0.284c which is 17.04c per minute.

You were using dial up during this long weekend so you will pay the rate of 17.04c per minute (billed per second).

Clearer??:D

Good morning, v3g and all on the thread.
I have been unable to connect all morning - I'm using my client's internet access through their LAN to post this.

Good 3G signal (-61dBm). Good EDGE signal as well. I can get to the *111# service (although it's intermittently unavailable).

I have a new 500MB bundle purchased this morning, and zero airtime. Every time I connect I get an error 619 in 3 to 5 seconds. (Tried with 3G Only, GPRS/EDGE only, internetvpn APN and internet APN.)

082155 say Vc are experiencing a problem with prepaid users getting billed from airtime even when they have a data bundle (or not connecting if no airtime). "We are waiting for confirmation on when it will be resolved." Apparently you can submit a claim for airtime used incorrectly.

well everything seems to be working fine today. at last. and just to point something out to v3g in most modern day terminology if a service is not working it is considered to be "down". the server is down. the internet is down. the aircon is down. its up to you guys to figure out exactly what is down and how it is down. not us.

The guys know about this and are busy resolving. Will give feedback as soon as I know something.
