Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

After roughly 2hours, and quite a few intermitent disconnections, i did another speed test...

Download Speed: 84 kbps (10.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 58 kbps (7.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

That's the lowest i have gotten thusfar. Webpage take +-30seconds to open. Signal Strength is constant 97 to 100%.

you not alone... i'm slower than that in the norwood area using the e220 too... 10kBps, there or there abouts but i guess with month end people are utlizing their free minutes. would this effect 3g speeds i wonder? must? surely?

I was still connected to HSDPA just now, but couldnt browse a single webpage. Time, 9h30pm. I had to disconnect and re-connect to continue with what i was doing.

On contract. Can connect, speeds slow, when trying to reconnect I did get 2 x 619's. Once connected, I stay connected though (never had an issue with that).

Something Fishy (not the restaurant)

has anyone else noticed the increasing disruptions and down time in vodacom's data network lately? what seems to be the problem with that? anyone else wanna share?

Ok, maybe we need to ask if anyone using a Contract Data Bundle is also experiencing these evening problems.

Top Up 135 (500MB Bundle) - no problem connecting and no disconnects.

HSDPA speed tests (20% signal strength):
Download Speed: 357 kbps (44.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 30 kbps (3.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Strangely I had slower speeds last week with 90 - 100% signal strength:confused:

I noticed that the contract subscribers have slow speeds just like the prepaid, but no intermittent disconnections.

For me it's wierd. I can connect but can do nothing with the connection when it's up (PrePaid). Will try and check the times out to see when it is occuring and also do the pings requested by V3G. The frequent disconnections are also annoying.

Things go from BAD, to WORSE...

Jumped to GPRS and got stuck for a moment... then got Disconnected.

PTA - Fearry Glen
Modem = N/A using HSDPA Phone

Problem isn't the phone, tested it near waterkloof and got great downloads there.

I'm still worried about the high pings on the smtp test. The speed seems ok now, but it's after 11pm, will check again tomorrow. The problem always comes back during normal usage hours, which doesn't help!

Also, if you can, while still connected, do a ping -t smtp.vodacom.co.za and see if you get a response. Then do a ping -t -l 500 smtp.vodacom.co.za and then a ping -t -l 1000 smtp.vodacom.co.za.

I'll send what I can to customercare, but since it's actually using GPRS on a phone I can't do pings etc.

"Disruptions" is rather vague, post specific details about the symptoms you're experiencing...

Let me tell you, i need to try to connect up to 5 times before i get a connection, and if i do get connected at times i get very low connection speed on mtn.

OK, my bad. We (VC) have known about the '7-PM' problem for quite a while, capacity planning pointed to it even before it started and specific actions were put in place to upgrade in time. These upgrades consist of two elements, systems on our side and bigger pipes from our friendly bits and bytes supplier.

The first system upgrades happened over the weekend, but the new systems decided they like to eat SMTP packets, so we had to roll back. Upgrades scheduled for this week, starting tonight.

Unfortunately the time-frames for the second stage is unknown at this point. Time for VCS to start digging.....

If only this could happen in the evenings :(

Does that include specifically the discrimination against prepaid users, being unable to connect during high usage times, rather than just a slowing of data rates?

No, there is obviously no discrimination against pre-paid users. They do run across different systems (especially the authentication process), and obviously something is going on there. I have logged it and the guys are investigating.

Maybe if you can PM me your pre-paid number and aprox times when it happens, it'll help them trace the problem.

PM sent.

Not implying discrimination is deliberate but the nature of the problem is definately different if you are on prepay or contract.
