Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

In case anyone misunderstands, it's probably best to clarify that it is the failure of many forumites to provide useful information [especially location] that eventually drives you dilly. What is the model number of that Huawei modem?

Hi ic, it's the E220 with Mobile Partner software

Guessing, but I'd say it's a backhaul issue, best to call 155 and insist on a reference number so the problem is logged.

Yes i did contact customercare a while ago, and they've responded with a few questions which i've given them.
Maybe it's a tower related problem.

Important to distinguish between the radio link between modem and base-station and the backhaul bandwidth from the base-station to the core network - I suspect the latter is the problem in your area.

BTW, have you tried [post=756106]ginggs' MDMA[/post] application with your E220? - it will give you more info than you're getting from the Huawei Mobile Partner s/w.

Yes i've tried ginggs' MDMA now with a test on Speedtest.net, and it was better than the other. (maybe coincidence)

Download Speed: 945 kbps (118.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 144 kbps (18 KB/sec transfer rate)

No one is insignificant.

Not aware of any global problem, so it's probably something local to your area or local radio conditions. Will ask. Or rather use the link in my sig and send me the details.

Out of the 11K+ posts I've made over the years, probably the most recurred response is to tell me where someone is and what the details of the problem is (check the template).

You'll be surprised how many PM's I get that reads "I can't work, what's wrong?".

Or "As per my post on the forum, I can't work, what's wrong?".

Eventually it drives you dilly....:)

I understand.

Thanks for your help :)

Vodacom sooo slow in Sunward Park, Boksburg

I was wondering if any other areas are affected with slow speed. I have noticed this since yesterday (3/5/2009)
This evening I did a few tests and these were my results:
Speedtest.net
Ping: 120ms
D/l: 0.37mbs
U/l: 0.51mbs

Vodacom test:
D/l: 2.240mbs
U/l: 1.115mbs

The problem seems to be when one leaves the Vodacom network?
In any case I spent 47 minutes on the line to 155 to report the fault. Boy it was like pulling teeth.
I really think Vodacom should jack up this side of their service.

Here in Nelspruit I have also started picking up extreme amounts of packet loss with international bandwidth.

EDIT: scratch that, extreme packet loss everywhere now.

Nelspruit,

The whole evening has been tainted with bad international connections. Since 11pm however, this has turned into a larger and larger issue.

Now comes to the point again where i have to try about 10 refreshes to load even this page.
Packet loss at 60% and higher.
GPRS seems to have disappeared altogether and 3G/HSDPA iss unstable at best.

By the way, is there som way i can "lock" my device to any one specific tower?
Seems a certain amount of my problem is with the constant switching of towers.

When i say constant, i mean... tonight it switches towers every 5-15 seconds.
Everytime it switches, the connection goes dead for anywhere between 2-30 seconds.

I just noticed the date...
At midnight, Telkom's stake in Vodacom expired.

Does this factor into the problem somehow?

Another update...

3G/HSDPA is now completely unavailable.
GPRS took me 25 minutes of "Error 619" before i finally connected, and it only stays connected for about 30 seconds at a time before disconnecting.

Vodacom's web page is now also unavailable.

Bad day for me, I have 2 projects I need to have finished by 10am...
Thank you again Vodacom for ****ing up my source of income.

Yup I also saw this last night. Vodacom speedtests were super fast reaching 3500kbps. International speedtests were shockingly slow. Slower than normal. Wonder what's going on.

Still very slow today, nothing's changed!

Still very slow today(5/5/2009)

It looks like major problems somewhere in the system.
I hope it will be resolved soon.
I still have not received confirmation from Vodacom re the fault reported to them:mad:

I think the best way of doing this would be to use an external Yagi antenna pointed at the tower giving the strongest average signal.
In the past I have personally used this method with outstanding results.
The people to contact are Poynting and they will be able to provide best possible advice taking your modem into account. They are situated in Wyburg, Johannesburg.
I still have my Yagi up although our tower has been upgraded since.
Check their website out as well.
Good luck
BTW: the speed in Sunward Park has improved and I think Vodacom are getting on top of their problems. This test is at 17h30 which is peak hour on our busy tower.
