Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

Anyone else having severe problems with Vodacom HSDPA since about last week ? I used to be able to play games using HSDPA for months and now suddenly I am lagging out ?

I have picked up more lag than normal recently too. The ping rates seem the same though. Soon the ADSL users will run out of data so hopefully it'll speed up :D

Vodacom

Hi
My location is in Pellisier Bloemfontein. Sometimes my ping is the same as it were before last week, but about 10 minutes in the game I will start lagging and then lag out. I heard some rumors that Telkom caps you to a slower line if they realize you are playing games, wondering if Vodacom is doing the same now? I just can’t understand how now all of a sudden I am having this problem. I have a very capable tool form McAfee and there is no other programs using the net, so I am quite sure the problem is not on my side

Problems connecting.

I can almost time my disconnections and general interrupted service (reconnect every two minutes or so). I don't seem to have a reliable service after 7pm at night. I get 619 errors on my E220 and a Error 734 when trying to use my Nokia E61i. I live in Pierre van Ryneveld, Centurion.

I had the strangest problem yesterday - I could connect to the internet fine, I could ping, I could send and receive e-mails - I could even FTP. But, I couldn't browse. Not local or international. Then, for some random reason I decided to try accessing my Gmail account using https - and it worked. http was still a no-go however. Same thing with Facebook.

This wasn't limited to one area either ... at various points in the day I was in Bothasig, Bellville, and Table View - and I was using two different systems (my laptop and my desktop back home).

First time I've ever come across something like this, so does anyone know what is going on? Friend of mine had the same issue in Parklands, Table View - so it wasn't just me.

Sounds like something stuffed around with port 80, maybe a firewall / cache / proxy, etc.

When did it recover?

I'm working off the office network at the moment, I haven't had a chance to test it yet today. But it was off until I disconnected at about 9pm last night.

If there was a general port 80 problem, the forum would've lit up like Chernobyl. I would've received detailed reports / instructions from at least both ginggs and morks, so I wonder if it's not something else.

But will ask the networking guys.

I had the exact same problem a while ago, but logged on this weekend and things were fine. There is really something very strange going on at Vodacom at the moment. All the dropped calls, bad HSDPA connection, strange things like mentioned above…..

Well ... I'd obviously logged a fault on 155 ... and I'll be honest ... they're generally easy to deal with, and I get calls back from the techs etc ...

So I got a call back this morning - about 11-ish I'd say ... tested - worked fine. Went online again after lunch ... problem was back - it's honestly like any http traffic gets throttled down to nearly non-existent - no time-outs or anything like that ... I'd get a blank page, or the top banner would load and I'd get my little done message in the status bar.

It's beyond frustrating ... I've spent more time on the phone to 155 in the past 2 months than I've spent in the 18 preceding months I've been on contract, and I don't think I've had a week's worth of trouble-free use in those 2 months.

And all of this crap started when Vodacom started upgrading their towers.

We've checked the stats and can't see any problem. Also, no other reports of similar behaviour from others.

Not wanting to push it back your way, but are you 100% nothing changed on your side?

If you 100% sure, and if the problem happens again, do an 'ipconfig /all' and pass me the output.

This is what I get:

On any given time I connect I get:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

With this connect I get no internet access.
I'll then disconnect and reconnect and get this:

Everything will be OK but sometimes with this connect I still get no throughput, usually at night.

Using the Linksys Router with the Huawei E620 I get this:

Well ... I can't say I'm 100% sure - but the same problem occurs on two different systems, and with different browsers as well.

At the moment its working absolutely fine, so I don't know if you still want my ipconfig info. Should it decide to break again (and I hope it doesn't) I'll record it and PM it to you.

I couldn't access websites last night, today was fine, but tonight again I can't access websites. I've had to log in to my PC at work using VNC to send this.

Same as you, https works, imap works, vnc works it only seems to be http that doesn't. My connection isn't slow at the moment either, I downloaded an attachment via imap and it came in at 2.9Mbps.

What was really strange is that I saw the exact same behaviour at the same time on MTN.

I have 2 computers here. Ubuntu, WinXP, Vista and 3 different 3G modems.

West Beach, Blouberg.

Sounds like an 'inline engine' thats running a fever :p Most likely of the transparent proxy variety...

Same APN?

Notice how your assigned IP changed range.

As per Afrinic. 41.1.x.x - 41.7.x.x has been allocated to Vodacom 3G Western Cape. I would assume it's all internet APN.

BTW. I saw the same terrible throughput on http yesterday evening. Today has been better.
