Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

Status
Not open for further replies.
Also having frequent page errors and very slow browsing.

Don't know what it is about Sunday nights. :(

@shadowfox, glamprecht and InquisitorJax: Please PM me your reference numbers, I want to forward them to the technician attending to this.
Fine, don't send me your reference numbers then.

After not seeing the problem again for a week I had it again this morning; no http, but https, smtp & imap working fine.
My IP address at the time was 41.6.78.206.

According to the technician, there was an http problem with the 40.6.x.x range of addresses. It seems there is still a problem with the 41.6.x.x range.
If this happens to you, please take note of your IP address at the time.

Hmm, I am having serious problems with Vodacom today ... can't even open up speed.vodacom.co.za :)

DNS resolution seems to be a problem, absolutely no data coming down, but there is some activity upstream.

IP: 41.31.251.228
Midrand area

Connected with a MC950D, 3G only profile. I normally get around 2.8Mb down, and 1Mb up
mdma stats:
Signal strength: -81dBm
Cell ID: 10531

EDIT: IP 41.27.130.73 also bust, so is 41.31.174.34
I am starting to think it's the area I am in

Last week or so my connection stops responding and I have to disconnect and re-connect to get things going again. Really irritating when you in a winning position in a game and get kicked off:sick:

hey, same here. i tried everything, flushed dns and registered dns and all.started to even think it was my browser or anti virus but tried it on several different computers and several modems to no avail adn worst thing is that all of this was happening in Vodaworld.it is rather annoying that this had to happen during the day:mad:

Things seem to be normal again this morning ... connecting to the same tower in Midrand, IP 41.29.x.y

I managed to get a 41.27.x.y IP again, same tower as yesterday, and everything is dead

v3g, can you check this for us please?

Can you maybe do a short summary? Not sure if I'll get it right from your various posts.

Basically you suspect IP range?

Pretty much yes ... feels like my iBurst days

When connected to certain IP ranges, up to now its been 41.31 and 41.27, the connection is just dead (can't even do the speedtest on Vodacom's site). I managed to get a 41.29 IP sometime during this period (same tower as when I had problems [ID 10531]) and then the connection was fine.

So based on the above, I don't think it is tower related, but rather some of the IP ranges that might be problematic

Was chatting to ginggs lat night and he wondered if you are seeing the same thing as seen before in Cpt.

Basically, HTTP stops working but all other protocols still work; ICMP, FTP, HTTPS, etc.

Seen anything like this?

I'll take a look sometime today and let you know. With my luck I'll keep getting working IPs today :)

Thanks!

EDIT: Will update this post as I progress:

IP Range 41.28 working fine
IP Range 41.31 working fine

3G/HSDPA Connectivity SUCKS bigtime at the moment .....

TIMEOUTS!
TIMEOUTS!

Aw man, my internet is dead slow again, anyone else in Cape Town / Brackenfell that also have slow connection tonight? (on 1.8mbs)

Vodacom
Down 1065
Up 177

SpeedTest - JHB
latency 660ms
Down 520
up 80

SpeedTest - NY
Latency 597ms
Down 620
Up 50

3G/HSDPA seems to have disappeared here from about 11:10pm.

Using Huawei Modem 172, with 64k sim. I tried switching over to GPRS/EDGE - connects but no download activity.

Details when connected are:

internet apn said:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Description: Vodacom
Physical Address:
DHCP Enabled: No
IPv4 IP Address: 41.8.88.171
IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
IPv4 Default Gateway:
IPv4 DNS Servers: 10.11.12.13, 10.11.12.14
IPv4 WINS Servers: 10.11.12.13, 10.11.12.14
NetBIOS over Tcpip Enabled: No

EDGE Cell ID: 11702
HSDPA Cell ID: 32051

I checked if the internet worked on my phone (32k sim), and it did. So I'm using that sim in my modem now, with following results:

IPv4 IP Address: 41.11.207.7

So to summarise:
  • no 3G/HSDPA signal on both the 32k and 64k sims.
  • On an EDGE connection on the 64k sim neither the internet apn nor the internetvpn apn works.
  • On an EDGE connection on the 32k sim, both the internet apn and internetvpn apn works.
  • The 32k sim is on a Top Up 135s using a 5MB (with 25MB free) bundle.
  • The 64k sim is on a Top Up 275 using a 2GB bundle.

Edit: I've noticed that 3G/HSDPA becomes unresponsive over the past week first at 10:55pm, then at 11:10pm - almost exactly the same time to the minute everyday. This was with the 64k sim. Prior to today, a disconnect and reconnect was enough to get things going again. Today the signal seems to have disappeared altogether:(.

I'm having problems connecting in Cape Town CBD - Strand Street.

Can see a strong 3G network, but can't connect. Was working really well earlier today in Pinelands.
