Vodacom ripping my dad off

So my dad signed up with Vodacom 24 month contract (pushy reps rocked up at his door).
I was horrified and cancelled it the same day it was installed.

Now the cancellation fee is over R12k !!!
I can understand if you pull out the contract half way through, but it looks like he has to pay all 24 months because it was cancelled on the 1st day of the 24 months!

Is this legal? Isn’t there something in the consumer act or something?
 
VC is known for that.

The CPA says you should pay for the remainder of the device and a reasonable penalty.
Someone I know died mid 2017, her hubby was also pretty much billed the rest of the contract, 10months, to end it. So then he simply kept the phone, made sure to use the minutes within the limits of the contract and then canned it at the end of the contract.

As far as I am aware there is a cool off period of about a week or is it a month? Anyway.. if it was cancelled the same day they in for trouble.

That is correct, especially since this contract was due to and based on direct marketing.

Tell VC to go fuk themselves. Although they will continue to bill and eventually blacklist you if you don't pay.
 
Does your father fall under elderly category? Could plead that
 
Cool off period I think applies..

Tell VC to go fsck themselves.
 
Update:
Well Kudos to Vodacom, They cancelled the contract without my dad needing to pay off the remaining (full) 24 months.

FWIW I got some legal advice: The contract does NOT begin from the moment you sign.
It only begins when you receive the item (in this case a service) begins.

As an example this advocate gave the analogy of buying a new car:

You sign all the forms and contracts with the dealership and bank. But 2 months later when your car is delivered you walk into the showroom, there's your car with a ribbon and all, you don’t like the colour or whatever reason don't want it, and walk out – that’s the end of contract. They can’t deduct your account for the next 48 months (or what you signed), not even a portion of the car is payable. The contract you signed stops right there null and void.

Think he mentioned before 5 days but definitely can be cancelled the same day. (regardless of when you signed).
