Catching up on some posts yesterday afternoon, I get an email with a code to activate my Whatsapp on Gmail.

My phone is on WiFi with Airplane mode (as I do every weekend). I use Whatsapp for private and business, so having it working is critical.

I decide to open WA and it asks for a code.... then I switch off Airplane mode to receive sms and I get the message 'SIM not provisioned'.
Everyting was fine a few hours before.

The Chatbot Vodacom uses is ass. Couldn't get any answers from it.

Help?

call
082 135 from another phone

Sounds like your number may have been recycled due to inactivity.

When was the last time you loaded airtime onto your number or preformed something that generated income for them?

This happened to me and it turned out someone had performed a sim swap on my number and tried to get into my whatsapp. Luckily I had 2fa on the account.

[SOLVED]

This is what I did:

  1. Switch phone (with the deactivated SIM) on and leave it on
  2. Call Vodacom Customer Care (I used the 082 178 44 one) from another phone
  3. Select SIM SWAP - and reverse SIM Swap request [this will revert your SIM to previous state and block new requests]
  4. Then select "Can't Receive SMS" - the bot arranges a Refresh on your account
  5. After these 2 requests you switch off your phone, wait a few minutes and switch it back on (the phone with the disconnect SIM of course).
  6. Great Success!
Once you regain Network Access double check your security (2FA etc.). Also revise your saved passwords and logins on Google.

Did you not get a SMS stating a sim swap was initiated?

i take it you on prepaid as well. on contract i know you get a sms and i know banking (nedbank at least) picks up on the change and blocks you for a week cause of it (even if its a legit simswop was super annoying).

No SMS at all, nor any request.

It might have been malicious or a system fault though - however, forcing the network to refresh the SIM worked a treat.

Pity to celebrate the SIM working again my first call was a telemarketer this morning!

sometimes (not always)
Refreshing the Nodes helps (my terminology on that side maybe little off)

a sim swap reversal though thats a first ive ever heard of.

Yeah it's nuts to think it's an option!
Was part of the process that got my phone back on the network so... yeah.
