I'm trying to assist a family member who has a Telkom email address on Outlook over a Vodacom Internet Connection (Both Fibre and Mobile).

Up until today, he was able to send emails using Telkom's outgoing mail server (smtp.telkomsa.net) without any issues. Now it completely refuses to send.

I've never been able to get any of Vodacom's SMTP servers to work with the Telkom address in the past, and still not having any luck now. I've tried smtp.vodacom.co.za, smtp.vodamail.co.za, and even smtp.vbmail.co.za.

I don't know if I'm perhaps missing something as far as settings are concerned? Or perhaps there's a temporary outage with telkom's SMTP servers.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

This worked for me

Use you Telkom out going server smtp.........

enable Outgoing Server Authentication (on mobile phones this is called ‘Require Sign-in’)
  • If prompted for a username and password for your outgoing server, please use the same as for your incoming server
  • Enable SSL and SMTP Port 465

Thanks so much, will definitely give this a shot in the morning.

You are welcome to drop me a PM as well. Same issue.

The trials and tribulations of telkom's SMTP [situation] - the one day it works, and another day, not.
A personal SMTP service as I suggested earlier would be the best route. SES however requires a bit more than the rest.

No luck so far I'm afraid. Telkom says their SMTP server won't work from other ISPs, and Vodacom says their SMTP server won't work with non-Vodacom email addresses. So we have a stalemate. :(

Having the same problem and will dump Vodacom Dongle as soon as I can.

We have a Telkom Email address and make use of Vodacom Dongle for Internet connection. Using Mailbird as Email Program. I have connection with smpt vodacom server, but when emails are sent Mailbird notification comes up to indicate "Mailbird was unable to send message - Please check your from "Identities Outgoing Server settings. ??? Using - smtp.vodacom.co.za Port 25 - My Telkom Webmail works fine. Can anyone help please.

Hi
Vodacom they have changed their smtp server to require authentication, but not told anyone. This is what I finally got out of them yesterday after struggling since last week Friday:
“Dear Vodamail User

To enhance security for vodamail users, anonymous authentication will be disabled for sending emails using the vodamail smtp. This will impact your ability to send emails using smtp.vodamail.co.za.

If you are affected you will be required to enable SMTP authentication in the settings menu of your email client. (eg Outlook, mobile app). The required username and password needs to be set the same as the incoming mail server settings and selecting ‘auto’ type encrypted connection.’’

Outgoing Server:
-Tick check box ‘ my outgoing server requires authentication’.
-select ‘use same settings as my incoming mail server’
-select advance Tab
-Outgoing mail server port: 25
-Use the following type of encrypted connection ‘Auto’
I am still struggling to find what username and password to use, as I don't use their email address.

This is the setting that work on my g mail

That's Gmail settings. It won't be the same for Voda.

Check Krieg's posts.
You need to use the Vodacom info for smtp.
Edit: corrected member name.

You won't be able to use the Vodacom server without an email account. You need to use the SMTP server of your own email domain.

I think what confuses a lot of people is the username format 2782123456, password can be reset through *111#.

I fully agree. Up till recently the vodacom did not need any authentication for its outgoing email server and you could send emails without an vodacom email account. Now you will have to use the server of the email account you are using thus my screenshot of the gmail out going server settings

Thank you, it was the username format that I needed to change.

Can anyone assist with this kak. My dad uses a Vodacom sim to connect to the internet. He has an email address with telkom and is using Thunderbird as an email client.

I have tried numerous settings and nothing works, even tried my own gmail details in the outgoing server settings but that also doesn't work.

Any help with this as he is unable to send any emails.

I still haven't found a single perfect workaround for this. Neither Vodacom Customer care or Vodacom Business seem to give a crap.

This is also something that people need to consider when signing up for cheaper, less known Fibre providers. Not all of them even have an SMTP server for POP emails.
