It should however be noted that VirginMobile, which uses the CellC network, only has EDGE and GPRS services which are far slower than Vodacom and MTN’s 3G and HSDPA offerings.

I'd rather have slightly slower speed and pay 1/4 of the price. Thanks.

R1.50 per mb. How nice - now it's only about 8 times more expensive than fixed line telkom dsl and 25 times more expensive than wholesale dsl. Wonder if they will reduce the R150 per mb international roaming data rate as well?

The article should be entitled "Vodacom to reduce data prices for some of its subscribers"

and should either read:

"Vodacom has announced a data rate reduction for its current contract data bundle users, with reductions of between 0% and 40% on out-of-bundle rates depending on which contract users are on."

OR

"Vodacom has announced a data rate reduction for some of its current contract data bundle users, with reductions of between 25% and 40% on out-of-bundle rates depending on which contract users are on."

Its still a price reduction. I'll take what I can get thanks. Virgin/Cell C is to slow and MTN dont have most the areas I'm in covered. It will save me some money not alot but every bit helps.

@ Vodacom... you not even trying!!!! Have you not been listening? the people DO NOT WANT BUNGLES (sp intended) they are difficult to manage and usually the user looses out. Give a flat cheap out of bundle rate and I will consider using your network for data.

Isn't the whole idea of buying a bundle that you somehow work out how much you're going to use and then (hope) fit within that range, and if you consistently don't, you increase your bundle???

If so, the out of bundle rate, for bundled users only - is sort of meaningless - yeah I know not really - but this is a principle thing - they've decreased rates for the data that technically should never be used :-(

Well obviously, voda do as they want. They see no threat from anything or no-one, no even NMP.

You'll probably find virgin and cellc battling it out for something (not sure what though). And, voda and Mtn, doing as they please.

In the mean time, i'll just stick my head in the sand..... tap me on the shoulder when something significant happens.....

VirginMobile remains the cheapest mobile data provider when it comes to basic per-MB data. They charge a flat rate of R 0-50 per MB for all data.

This reduction brings Vodacom in line with MTN’s out-of-bundle rates. MTN’s 1 GB customers are currently paying R 1-25 per MB when exceeding their limit while their 500 MB bundle subscribers are charged R 1-50 per MB out of bundle.

Correction: MTN's out-of-bundle rate is R1.50 for 350MB and 100MB bundles. So they still have one up on Vodacom.

I don't get downtime any more and don't experience any problems. Sure it's slower than it was in the beginning, but it's faster than it was at the time just before the downtime. Maybe they were upgrading their network.

They don't need to try with all the speed freaks on their network. Even in the SA market where people complain about price being too much they are still willing to pay more for something a little bit faster.

Yes, you're right, this is almost meaningless and applies only to the data that is used the least. Most people actually try to keep within their bundle and if you can't then a bigger bundle makes sense if the after bundle rate costs you more than a bigger bundle. I'm still looking for the reduction as implied by the title. A reduction on data "rates" implies on their basic out of bundle rate and bundles and NOT the after bundle rate which is just a drop in the bucket. It's only in South Africa that such a fuss will be made over something that's of NO value to 95% of people. It's a clear indication of our anti-competitive market.

Bundles are archaic, I wish Vodacom would just learn that and stop trying to pull one over on us. Since when do you lose something if you don't use it right away? At R2/MB it costs only 0.0305c for 160 bytes of data or even with a header 0.0381c for 200 bytes. SMS is the biggest cash cow yet. It's over 99.999% pure profit.
