Vodacom WiFi here

this is predictable actually...one of these days well will be saying..lets all go back to Telskum...HELL NO!!

Or telkom will reinvent the 56k modem and will launch it for R499 a month because its uncapped!

sure it sounds expensive, comparing it to 'normal' local bw pricing... but perhaps not so bad, when comparing it to roaming charges, or when u use a local prepaid sim overseas???
Mweb's iPass works well to connect to internet in foreign countries, but even that is $150/hour.
We currently looking at other options for connecting while visiting overdasea.... one of our guys just came back from a 2week biztrip in the US, facing a +R27000 data bill

This article did not do a proper comparison with other WiFi products that are available.

Alwayson/IS/MWeb hotspots offer 100MB@R60, 250MB@R140, 500MB@R250, 1GB@R450 and 2GB@R800 valid for 1 year - still expensive but much better value than the Vodacom offer.
http://hotspot.alwayson.co.za/hotspot/help/help.htm

It also failed to mention that Telkom gives all of their ADSL customers 10 free 30 minute sessions per month at any of the T-Zone hotspots. Surely Vodacom could at least provide a similar service to all of their data bundle customers by providing 300 free minutes at any of their hotspots?

Good point...

Did anybody here really think Vodacom was going to launch Wi-Fi in an effort to bring affordable internet access to the country???
And the early adopters of this will invariably also be the beta testers, like so many 3g subscribers may have felt.

For now they can park all the towers they have up and those planned up their @rses and turn them sideways for good measure or extra pleasure:mad:

when i'm sitting at Mcd's and want to do something quick, this is great, how much time u really spend at 'hot spots' to do loads of downloading?

all i'm wondering is how the speed on this will be because "fast" these days mean anything between 200kbps and 8mbps?

think its pretty cool though... will take my lappy to mcd's tonight and check my gmail just to see how it is . :P

Was @ Mcd in southgate, telkom gives you 10min free internet thought i should do speedtests, the below is what i got:
Wi-fi conection speed: 54MBps
Download speed:434 kb/s
Upload speed: 314 kb/s
ISP: Telkom
Ping: 193 ms

We also use ipass but through cgnet, yeah, its expensive. I just use local prepaid where i travel now and use ipass in emergencies.

I made a similar comment as you about MTN but sadly my post was removed. Obviously a sensitive issue for some

Are you serious? That's disturbing... any mods want to comment why Skeptics comment was deleted?

I did see your earlier posting but it now seems to have mysteriously disappeared. Could it have been accidentally deleted?

Yes... "mysteriously". :D

Obviously someone is trying to conceal the facts and place VodaCon in a good light even though they're ludicrously overpriced...

postings getting removed isn't a good sign!
