Vodacom's "Upgrade your Modem [Dashboard Software]" drive

Mobile Partner is great imo.

I would then just like to find out exactly what happens if you upgrade and it fails and the device is trashed. Will Vodacom replace it?

The above case with both
a) Flashing to mobile partner software
b) Flashing to upgraded Vodacom software as per Vodacom website

Thanks for replies so far :) FYI I have already trashed one device before that failed at the beginning of an upgrade as per Vodacom website so I know it is bound to happen with so many devices. Golden Rule...nothing ever runs smoothly.

EDIT: Can't get through to 082 1555 for some reason to ask them these questions :/ it is just engaged rather than the normal answering service.

For sure but I still want to know what happens if updating VMLite fails and the card is trashed. AFAIK you can still trash a card updating it's software and not the firmware (which I can confirm because it happened to me once before...think there is a thread about that here somewhere too)

I have never tried using a seperate dash as opposed to what the card has installed :/ You plug it in and it's own dash is active with whatever software is on the card. I have never tried to change that as it would just make things more difficult for the users I suppose.
 
Oh goody what a great omen I just had. The very first user who attempted this and is fortunately onsite and who I allowed admin rights temporarily has received an error on install after the device was updated. So now the device won't install the software on the PC :mad:

:(:(:(:(

Seeing as I can't get to a vodacom shop she is going to take everything there sometime tomorrow. Hopefully they can help :/

I recently received word that one of our users got a notice from Vodacom stating that she must upgrade the software on her 3G card otherwise it will not work.

Is there something happening at Vodacom I am not aware of or what is the story with this?

The reason for my concern is that we have over 60 of these E220 3G cards that were purchased a long time ago. Every user who has one of these cards does not have admin rights and this means I would have to upgrade all of them myself, 90% of them are offsite and not even anywhere near Johannesburg.

The upgrade itself apparently does not need admin rights but first time use of the software does!

So I just need to know if there is any truth to this and what if the users trash their 3G cards during the update if something goes wrong?

The thought of 60+ users of ours trying to attempt this makes me shudder :(

You okes are making me skrik...it looks like I'm buying a second hand E220. I'll have no warranty etc on it but will need to update it to make it work properly. What happens if it gets bricked?
 
^ Well afaik they will swap the device out or fix it from what I hear but still have not had anyone confirm this without doubt on my part.
 
Please note that if you're using Dell E6400's that with the old firmware you may find that the laptop does'nt recognise a E220 with the old firmware , in this case you can flash it with the HSDPA tagged E220 firmware update.

One of the clients who called in had this problem and got sorted out using that update. XP SP2 on his old laptop and then XP SP2/3 on the new laptop and it did not recognise the device but recognized other USB devices.

Funny you should mention this. I have done a few upgrades lately at work as part of an upgrade project and all the laptops are E6400's.

After a helluva lot of fiddling around I finally managed to get the E220's going on the E6400s without an update :p but man what a mission :eek: I have a lot more upgrades to do though

Great stuff.

Just remember when you connect at 7.2mbps that that is the connection to the tower , from the tower to the rest of Vodacom it should maintain that speed , once its out over Vodacom's routers and into the greater internet then that speed will decrease considerably.

If any ISP in ZA can afford to give each sub a full connection from the terminal / computer via the ISP's network and get that same throughput back from the internet then they need considerable bandwith (gbps) compared to (mbps) as well as considerable cash to do it.
