Have just got a call from a person at VC telling me I had to go to the VC website or pop into a VC shop and get the latest software for my e220, else it would soon cease to work. What gives? I told her I'm using Mobile Connect, the software written for the modem by the people who made the modem. She says: "vodafone made the modem and it will only work if you use the latest software from them - please upgrade as soon as possible to avoid being unable to connect to the internet with your e220."

Anyone else being told this? The day I flash this e220 (which I now own - the contract has finally expired) with anything from vodafone will never come.

I think this is to do with the hardcoded DNS for a blank APN on VMCLite (old version)

I also thought that, but then - this is a bit late, isn't it? Nice of them to catch up with me, now that I'm six days out of my contract. I asked if it was something to do with a tower upgrade, as I had no 3G or HSDPA yesterday, but a speed test this morning shows +/- 300 / 3000. Nope - just " you must upgrade to the latest version of VMC". I suppose this person was just a call centre bot - no reason to expect her to be a tech.

There are so many versions:

v 11.110.05.00.00 from Vodafone
v 11.117.10.00.00 from MTN
v 11.117.09.04.00 from Vodacom

I guess each firmware has something unique to each provider.

V3G : Can you confirm that the firmware on the vodacom site makes the E220 7.2 compatible?

This is interesting because I purchase my vodafone branded E220 about 6 months ago and it came with firmware v11.117.09.04.00 pre-installed. This is good to know as I don't have to update firmware at this time and the modem has been 7.2 compatible all this time.

Do I need to "upgrade"?

Sorry to hijack this thread but it seems to be the same topic i was about to post. I also got that call and I'm not sure whether I need to upgrade - every time I do anything to my E220 it falls over for days on end, so I don't want to fix what isn't broken!

I'm using Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite but can't figure out what version - the only version number I can find is 9.3.0.8940 which is nothing like 3.2.1.156, so I'm wondering whether it's an entirely different dashboard. My firmware is 11.304.08.00.00.

Thanks to V3G it's been working fine for the last while - I even got over 200kbps this morning (this is quite something - I used to average about 11kbps until they upgraded our tower to Edge). So, as I say, I don't want to upgrade unless I absolutely have to...

Thoughts please? :D

:o How embarrassing. You're quite right. I forgot I was upgraded to the E272! My mother-in-law is due to inherit the old E220 so I'll have to go and check which version is on there. I'll just crawl back into my hole now...

Are we being forced to flash 3G cards?

Sorry if this has been posted before but couldn't find anything in the search.

@ the Vodacom reps

I recently received word that one of our users got a notice from Vodacom stating that she must upgrade the software on her 3G card otherwise it will not work.

Is there something happening at Vodacom I am not aware of or what is the story with this?

The reason for my concern is that we have over 60 of these E220 3G cards that were purchased a long time ago. Every user who has one of these cards does not have admin rights and this means I would have to upgrade all of them myself, 90% of them are offsite and not even anywhere near Johannesburg.

The upgrade itself apparently does not need admin rights but first time use of the software does!

So I just need to know if there is any truth to this and what if the users trash their 3G cards during the update if something goes wrong?

The thought of 60+ users of ours trying to attempt this makes me shudder :(

Also to add...what are the implications then of using the Mobile Partner software instead of Vodacom software if we are forced to upgrade?

No offense but Vodacom software has proven time and time again to be absolute trash. The two times I had flashed a device with Mobile Partner software from the manufacturer in desperation it worked absolutely perfectly and I have more confidence with that software than vodacom software. It is faster to startup/load, more stable making a connection, more stable as a program itself, easier to use and doesn't make my job a helluva lot more difficult like the vodacom one does. As if I have time to waste worrying about Vodacom issues :/

(Honestly have spent many many many hours troubleshooting problems with Vodacom software and helpdesk @ Vodacom are useless...it is always the PC's fault the device doesn't work)

All users with E220 modems were advised to upgrade their modems to the latest software - being VMC Lite 3.2.1.

The new software corrected a DNS entry. You were able to connect, but there was no throughput.

All users with VMC Lite 1.0 or 2.2.1 needed to do this upgrade, or re-create the 'internet' APN to correct this DNS problem.

The DNS servers have been restored, but we not sure for how long.

If you have Mobile Partner installed on all your E220's then you shouldn't have the DNS problem and there is no need to upgrade any devices.

The upgrade was only advisable on people using VMC Lite software version lower than 3.2.1.

Full version VMC is not affected, only the Lite version.
