The simplest answer would be to flash the K4605 to an E372 if you have a device that supports the E372, but not the K4605.

In my case I wanted general software on the modem, and not the Vodafone specific software. This makes it easier to use non-Vodafone or Vodacom ISP's on the modem. For example, my E372 (ex K4605) has new firmware and a generic Mobile Partner and works with any ISP - I use it mostly with Cell C, but also with 8ta and sometimes with Vodacom.

Also, Vodafone are extremely tardy with firmware releases, so the modems often have old and slightly unstable firmware on them. If you flash it to a standard device, you can load new optimised and stable firmware on it.

Edit : But this is not for everyone ! I did it on two K4605's, and am more than happy with the results. The modem is now supported by more routers, and is (I believe, difficult to prove) more stable.

PS : I have never had a USB 3G dongle just fail, so I am not worried about the warranty angle.

Bleh, successful flash - unsuccessful results. Still getting the same error 668. What's next?

Which network, Vodacom?
 
Mobile connection not possible.

- Set your current mobile device as the default
device under the 'Devices' tab in the Advanced window
- Ensure that no other applications are using your
mobile device and try again in a short while
- Delete the device under the 'Devices' tab in the Advanced
window, add it back again, and then try connecting
- If you see the 'Account Type' option in the Options window,
check that the right account is selected for your SIM.

If this error persists, please contact Support
at your mobile network operator.

Nope, Vodacom. That's the weird part! But I'm thinking factory failure. It didn't connect straight out of the box, where other colleagues are connecting effortlessly. This was part of a office equipment upgrade. But at least now I can play around with it until I get it to work, upon which I will deem myself (and Jola / JimM) a 3G hero and in the process also learn a lot about the inner working of a 3g modem!

Not working with Vodacom, take it in and chat with them about it. I connect to Vodacom 8ta and 8ta/MTN fine, just don't have much joy when it comes to Cell-C. The Cell-C problem is being investigated.

Interesting, never had a problem with Cell C, either with K4605 or with E372 !
 
My guess, then is that the local towers do not have support for the daul frequecy protocol the K4605 uses ... , where problems are being experienced. Wonder what form of "juggling" the mobile operators are doing to try and accomodate these modems ...

Yeah!!! I know :), just that there are locations where they don't work - by me no Cell-C, other reports are that some guys are having problems with 8ta, and Shibby has a problem with Vodacom of all people so ... , I just Wonders ... , you understand ... :)

Event-triggered upgrade? One week ago I bought 8ta E367, it was tried to connect to Cell-C, but it was disconnecting immediately. It started to work with 8ta after one day delay, it worked well with Vodacom. I couldn't do more testing, so didn't report to Cell-C. Yesterday I tested it again with Cell-C with no problem.
