Hi

I wonder if anyone can help. I have a really annoying issue with my phone (Samsung Galaxy S2) and have narrowed it down to MTN. What happens is the amazing voice recognition does not work on MTN but does work on Vodacom. When doing the double tap on the home button and then saying anything works beautifully on Vodacom. MTN just reports unable to contact server. So my conclusion is that MTN blocks certain ports that is necessary for the phone to do voice recognition that is done on some remote server. I can still talk via bluetooth but have to dial manually. Additionally I can't do any handsfree functions on the phone as it all needs an active server connection. Its really frustrating as I drive very far every day.

I haven't been able to find out anything else about it so I'm asking the gurus here to help. I have tested this issue on 3 different Androids and its all the same. Vodacom works everytime and MTN not at all. There is nothing that I can change on my phone to fix it. Definitely network related.

Please help!

Ok this is BAD. I've been on the phone now with MTN for about an hour. Finally speak to "Jerome" in technical. He says firstly that the phone does on device voice recognition. WRONG. It contacts a server. The phone says so. Also it works perfectly on Vodacom but not on MTN. Then he tells me we don't even sell the Galaxy S2. WRONG. I got it from MTN Kollonade. So he keeps on skirting around the issue. Apparently port 19294 both inward, outward, udp & tcp must be open. I'm trying to explain this to him. He doesn't seem to comprehend. Watch this space.

Contact MTNData Dude / 808 - ask to provision your account for the 'public apn' - takes 24h.

I call bull**** on the port blocking though - as it works for me, perfectly
That said - if the public apn does sort it.. it IS related to port blocking 0.o to which I say :WTF:

I tried that. MTN said I'm already accesing the public APN. After severe hopping around I now spoke to a chap called Sam at MTN 1555 and he said they will enable MTN VPN on my number. This will bypass just about everything they have filtering and blocking packets on the network. This should take approximately 2 hours. If it still doesn't work then it can't be them. But I know it will work.

Quick question Anthro - Did your voice recognition just work? Do you have the S2? We have 4 phones here - 3 Galaxy S2 and one Galaxy S1 here that are all on MTN and none of them has working voice recognition - that is unless we put in a Vodacom sim card. Then it works perfectly.

I'll let you know if it works.

I am also on MTN and my voice recognition does not work with their internet connection, but when i use the wi-fi at my work to connect to the internet my voice recognition works perfectly.

Just remember if you are going to use the MTN VPN you must change you APN from "myMTN" to i think it must be "MTNvpn" in you MTN Data settings, for the MTN VPN to work you must just find out from your contact at MTN. We had to do something like that for work to open all the ports on the MTN network.
