Voicy does Norway

"One does not simply read Road Signs into Mordor." ... tunnels. Tunnels EVERYWHERE. Longest one I've been in is 12km long and the longest in the country is around 18km I think. The one in Stavanger even goes 264m under the sea between 2 islands.

Actually no, the WORLDS longest road tunnel is in Norway at 24.5Km.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lærdal_Tunnel

I will be driving through it on my way to Bergen in September.

Of course! you're right. I thought that one was 18. My bad. Here it is. I was in Bergen last week but headed north to Ålesund. We're doing Voss / Sogndal in August so I'll probably be driving through it.

Have an awesome time there! How long are you in Norway for?

So this is midnight in my home town. So much for trying to sleep.

This would present a problem for me I have to say. When I visited my friend in London it was in their summer and it being still light out by 9 at night really messed with my head. I can just imagine what seeing the sun at midnight still would do to me .:p

You mentioned that when doing your licence you have to do a certain amount of night driving also, now what happens when it's summer? How do you do it then?

Looks cool, but ill pass,

Its too damn cold!!!! And no sun is gonna mess me up for life!!!!

Aurora are really cool, love to see those, don't they hiss as well?

What are their newspapers like? do they have any bad news in there?

Well oddly enough the night driving goes hand in hand with the skid pad training because there's no ice or darkness. From what I'm told those who do it during summer get a conditional license and have to perform the tests at the start of winter in order to qualify. Kinda makes sense because they're not really at risk of driving at night or on ice during that period anyway.

Here's their major newspaper: http://www.vg.no/

They're high on social issues and Euro-problems.

Whereas the local paper in my area, http://www.vol.no/ , is very community focussed...they tend to blow extremely minor issues out of proportion because there is very seldom anything bad. The big issue these days is that there are too many kindergartens per kids ratio. Yeah. Too many schools.

Oh! And a caravan is lying unhooked next to the road! Watch out everyone!

So its exactly like that movie hot fuzz?

No crime, so the cops will stop you if your plates are skew?

Yeah man. I always refer to this place as "The Shire". So safe and sheltered from the rest of the world. The cop shop here closes at 6pm I think...and it's just administrative. The cops also don't carry firearms on them. All they really do is speed trapping, breathilizing and giving stern talks to drunk teenagers outside bars.

Here's an article about how the entire Norwegian police force only fired 2 rounds last year..both hitting nothing.

They totally stop you if anything on your car is off. If your road tax is out of date you get fined and if they catch you with studded tyres on during summer you get fined per stud. If you're towing a trailer more than 50km from your house you need a meter installed in your vehicle that records that you take driving breaks every 2hrs.

I have a theory about all of this though. So many of my friends look at it and say they have nothing to complain about and must come live in SA to see what real life is like...but maybe this is real modern life as it should be.

I want them to complain about the little things. The minute you start ignoring it to focus on "more important" things, then you allow the frowned upon to become the norm...and once it's the norm you've effectively lowered your standard of living. So you start letting the next small thing slide...and before you know it your president is spending R250m on his own house, infrastructure is falling apart and crime is out of control.

So I like that they are anal about keeping all the cars on the road insured and roadworthy. With everyone in the car belted in.

Damn! I thought this was a porn thread! ;)

Hehehe! in all honesty, I think it is awesome that we have forumites the world over that can post such images!

Snow is awesome and all, but during winter my daily 20min ritual consists of this nonsense.

Bobsled avenue had about 4m of snow the time I was driving through. In winter a lot of the major roads are just closed off entirely, other times you drive in convoys behind a snowplow.

Okes ice fishing on the lake behind my town. The first step in ice fishing is always "a little boring".

To get anywhere you have to either take a tunnel or a ferry. These car ferries are enormous (there is another deck below the one seen here to load cars. It can take well over 100 cars at a time)

Ockie, this is our main shopping street. No car guards. You even pump your own petrol.

... and clean!

@Voicy: Just wanted to say thanks for the cool thread. Busy going through it now and it's great to get a perspective like this of another place. All the best :).

Thanks chaps! And to think exactly a year ago I was working for Eskom, dealing with race cards being played against me and living with my parents. So if I can do it aaaaanyone can.
