My suburb is going fibre, so i am definitely going to ditch my adsl.
This got me thinking, can i ditch telkom completely and my voice line?
Are there any voip products that will come in less than the R165pm I pay for the telkom line, and be simple enough to use?

Most should come in at less than that.

I'm currently with Connection Telecom and have the normal 087 VoIP number and a geographic number on 021 673.

They should have geographic for all the major cities of you want one. Needed the 021 number as banks insist on a landline for a company. Stupid rules.

Edit: Paying about R50 per month excluding calls.

and all you need is decent internet, and a voip phone? nothing more?
How is call quality?

Vox have an offer for R25 a month IIRC.

Have a soft phone app on my cell and pc. Call quality is on par. On my cell I need at least 3g for a decent VoIP call.

Haven't got me a physical VoIP phone as I don't need one. Can receive all my VoIP calls on my cell even when not home.

Someone told me that I could port my existing Telkom phone number. Is this correct ?

I use Nexus.co.za - I only pay for calls I make.

My router, an old Billion 7401, supports VOIP, so I set VOIP up via the router. My DECT phones plug into the router and I have set up dialing rules for least cost routing where cell calls go via VOIP and landline via Telkom.

www.switchtel.co.za will port your existing number, R49.00 pm and reasonable rates, excellent quality.
They can supply an ATA so you can use your existing pots phones.
