Volvo advises against fitting sound system :(

So ... I wanted to fit some nice sound system in my car and I sent Volvo an email asking them of the implications - I was never ready for their response

And it went:

"Volvo will not be responsible for repairs/replacement of any components that is a direct result of unauthorised modifications of the vehicle or any parts modification. (for example, but not limited to: exhaust systems, audio sound equipment and entertainments systems, tracking units, performance enhancement devices, park distance control units, drive trains, towbars or any other non-Volvo approved accessory.)"

We would recommend or suggest that you should not fit a non-approved Volvo product as this will have an impact on your warranty and might arise in the warranty being void."

It kind of sucks, but I'm glad I asked them first... so if you own a Volvo or any other car brand - think twice ... or you can just ask...

Uhm...honestly what did you expect?

This is the norm for pretty much anything covered by a warranty. Why on earth should they be responsible for your modifications?

More than anything what exactly is wrong with a presumably new Volvo sound system (considering it's still under warranty) that you could possibly feel it needs to be "nicer"?

Before you drive your car again I highly advise you read the manual and actually understand the terms and conditions you agreed to when purchasing it.

And I hope you are servicing it as per the mileage/time that passes otherwise you are in for another surprise.
 
So where do you find the Volvo approved products, don't they have a list of approved suppliers who can fit the radio?

Basically that's it - or if you want premium sound - they (Volvo) said they can fit it for you using their preferred brands and technologies at a mammoth cost of course - the quote was like 17k

I am doing everything by the book / and that's why I consulted them before going to my Indian friends for a fitment. What surprises me though is that Opel didn't have a problem with this when I asked them a few years ago - but it is what it is.

Dude, you did the right thing and saved yourself a whole lot of hurt, I think this topic should get pinned for people searching for something like this as, many like you may have had a brand that does allows this and may have moved to one that doesn't.

I avoided buying a car that had aftermarket park distance control with camera installed, as my first thought was that the manufacturer will see that and find it a reason to void my warranty.

With that being said, Volvos in my experience tend to come with some pretty powerful (for an OEM) sound systems, at least the Volvo S60 and C70 we have in the family do, both are pretty damn good and quite loud.

Highly unlikely that Opel would be cool with you taking a car still under warranty to your Indian friends for a radio fitment, unless your Indian friend happened to be an approved installer or your warranty had long expired and it did not matter to them what you do with your car.

You're right, but I was born and grew up in Durban and I had Indian friends and I know how a car should sound ... - but as you said, it's always good to ask - because a 5k sound could mean a massive bill down the road ...

Well Volvo won't have a problem with it either.

But if something connected to the sound system dies and they find it could have caused it then they won't cover it.

They however can't deny your entire warranty just because of a single component change, unless they can prove that it caused the overall failure for instance.

And you are saying the standard sound isn't premium?

What kind of **** Volvo are you driving because all of them I've been in had great sound that I would have absolutely no inclination towards changing.

Especially not with crap from my "indian friends".

I know real sound trust me - I'm a party person - hence I wanted the modification. But like I have said, it is what it is.
 
1. When you say nice sound system, do you mean changing the head unit and speakers or only the speakers?
2. Do you have a tracking device in your car? If yes. Did you get approval from Volvo for it to be fitted?

No head unit change - cause that would deface my car ... literally, I wanted to add an amp, 6x9s, tweeters and a sub... using the existing face

They can't void your whole warranty for the PDC.

What they can do is void a claim when you for instance were to complain about the paint chipping on the bumper where the PDC was fitted.

The only time it really gets a bit sketchy is if you were to change the exhaust which would in theory affect the entire fueling system and engine. However if you had the resources to fight that fight with a lawyer you would probably walk away from that too with a warranty in place depending on exactly what you did.

Oh right so basically you want BOOM BOOM BOOM and a rattling numberplate.

Not real proper crystal clear sound.

Volume does not equal quality.
