Volvo advises against fitting sound system :(

It's impressive that they even sent you a reply at all.

Every single car manufacturer will tell you to fk off if you ask them about 3rd party modifications.

The manufacturers always threaten "warranty void" but they have to prove if the modification has directly caused a warranty related malfunction. E.g. If the gearbox fails they cannot blame the radio installation.

Oh, by the way - for all the righteous out there - it seems you cannot fit any tracking units as well.

You can do whatever you want.

But if that tracking unit causes something on the car to break they can happily tell you to duck off as it’s not their problem.

They cannot cancel your entire warranty as many seem to think.
 
In my VW's/Audi's , I always fit sound (splits, DSP,amps and subs). No problems with warranty. That's why i like buying VAG vehicles, can do what you like ( As long as it's done properly).

In fact I now remember I had a direct situation myself. How could I have forgotten!!

I have a panel van that had come with no radio so I installed an aftermarket one.
Noticed months later (only drove it at night once a few months later) that the lighting on the climate control was not working and instinctively felt it was related to radio install.
Went to the radio guy who checked it 3 times and insisted it was not the radio but must be another fault.

So I took it for a warranty claim to the dealer.
They worked out that it was related to the radio via the Canbus and promptly billed me for the fix but guess what?...no voiding of warranty happened.

Apparently you are.

See Post #19 and related mentions in other posts where I specifically said they cannot void your entire warranty.

Just components directly linked to the modification, such as in the case of the sound system the battery and alternator.

Exactly why I mentioned the VW/Audi case.

If you don’t change the canbus gateway then it kills the battery.

VAG will simply charge you for the battery instead of replacing at their cost.

They can’t void the entire car’s warranty for the bloody radio, just the component warranty.

Bikes are even more lenient. In the case of my BMW now I can fit a full exhaust system with headers and everything. As long as they do the work it’s covered by warranty.

Previous bike the exhaust was replaced, air filter and a race map was loaded and even when it threw a big end bearing there was no warranty drama.

In fact it happened after the warranty had expired already and they still covered all the parts, I just covered some of the labour, because the cause had nothing to do with the mods but rather the oil pump that was untouched.

All services etc done by dealer so there was no drama.
